OKLAHOMA CITY — The grandest stage in college softball demands legendary moments, and on Saturday afternoon at Devon Park, sophomore second baseman Emma Clarke delivered an instant classic in the WCWS.
With one swing of the bat on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning, Clarke blasted a solo walk-off home run dead center, breaking a tense gridlock and propelling the No. 7 seed Tennessee Lady Volunteers to a thrilling 2–1 victory over the No. 11 seed Texas Tech Red Raiders. With the win, the Lady Vols remain undefeated in the winners’ bracket and punch their ticket straight to the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) Semifinals.
Clarke’s game-winning shot marks Tennessee’s first walk-off home run at the Women’s College World Series since legendary Lady Vol Tonya Callahan crushed an 11th-inning blast against Michigan in 2005.
Pitching Masterpieces From Both Sides
Before the late-inning fireworks, the 5,125 fans in attendance were treated to a fierce tactical pitchers’ duel featuring some of the country’s elite arms.
Tennessee’s All-American duo of Karlyn Pickens and Sage Mardjetko proved completely unflappable. Pickens got the nod, commanding the circle for 6.2 stellar innings. After surrendering a single in the first inning, Pickens caught fire, retiring 11 consecutive Red Raider batters and limiting Texas Tech’s dangerous lineup to just five hits while striking out six.
When Texas Tech loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, Mardjetko entered the game in relief. The sophomore ace coolly navigated the high-wire act, working 2.1 hitless, scoreless frames to secure her 16th victory of the year (16–2).
The pitching was backed by spectacular defense. In the top of the sixth, with Tennessee clinging to a 1–0 lead, Texas Tech’s Mia Williams doubled, and Mihyia Davis lined a single up the middle. Center fielder Sophia Knight charged hard and fired an absolute laser to the plate, cutting down Williams at home to preserve the lead. Later in the seventh, outfielder Alannah Leach made a spectacular diving grab to end another Red Raider threat.
The Long Ball Breakdown
With Texas Tech starter Kaitlyn Terry and star reliever NiJaree Canady matching Tennessee pitch-for-pitch, the Lady Vols had to rely on the long ball to generate their offense:
- The Freshman Strike (5th Inning): After being frustrated by Canady with the bases loaded earlier in the game, freshman Taelyn Holley broke the scoreless tie by launching an opposite-field solo home run over the left-field wall. It marked the second straight WCWS game in which a Lady Vol freshman homered.
- The Red Raider Response (7th Inning): Texas Tech refused to go quietly. Taylor Pannell led off the seventh with a single and eventually crossed the plate on a deep sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Desirae Spearman, tying the game at 1–1 and forcing extra innings.
- The Walk-Off Winner (9th Inning): After Mardjetko sat down the Red Raiders in order in the top of the ninth, Clarke stepped up to the plate. Waiting on a 1-0 pitch, she unleashed a powerful swing that sent the ball carrying over the center-field wall, triggering a wild celebration at home plate.

What’s Next for the Lady Vols
With two monumental victories over Texas and Texas Tech under their belt, head coach Karen Weekly’s squad finds themselves in the driver’s seat in Oklahoma City. Tennessee earns a well-deserved rest day on Sunday while the elimination bracket sorts itself out.
The Lady Vols will return to Devon Park on Monday for the Semifinals, sitting just two wins away from playing for a National Championship.
