We have reached the final weekend of the America East baseball season, and the dust has largely settled: all six spots for the postseason tournament are officially locked. The only drama remaining is the final seeding, which will determine the path to glory when the league heads to Binghamton, NY.
The odd team out is the NJIT Highlanders. Despite a gutsy performance against #23 Boston College, NJIT saw its league season come to an end. While there is still one final weekend for tune-ups, the Highlanders will be watching the postseason from the sidelines.
Binghamton Claims the Throne
The Binghamton Bearcats (26-19, 15-6) aren’t just hosting the tournament—they’re entering it as the undisputed #1 seed. They secured the top spot by taking two of three from the UAlbany Great Danes over the weekend.
While UAlbany managed to win the second game of a weather-induced doubleheader on Saturday, that victory was bittersweet. While it ended NJIT’s postseason hopes, the Great Danes still slid down the standings. Following a UMass Lowell sweep of Maine, UAlbany now sits in sixth place as they head to Orono to finish its season against the Black Bears.
The Race for the Bye: UMBC and Bryant
UMBC (25-21, 12-9) currently holds second place, a vital position that grants a coveted bye into the quarterfinals. The Retrievers have four games left, including a midweek clash with Towson before a final conference series against NJIT. The Highlanders proved they can play spoiler after their 8-7 upset of Boston College, so UMBC cannot afford to look past them.
Meanwhile, Bryant University has already completed its league schedule, finishing at 13-11 for a solid third-place standing. The Bulldogs avoided a home sweep on Sunday thanks to Carlos Irizarry’s walk-off single in the ninth.
Stat of the Week: Under head coach Ryan Klosterman, the Bulldogs previously held a staggering 4–105–1 record when trailing after eight innings. Sunday’s comeback was a rare and vital defiance of those odds.
At 26-22 overall, Bryant still has a shot at a 30-win season as they wrap up with four non-league games, starting Tuesday against Stonehill.
River Hawks Rising: The Sweep in Orono
The UMass Lowell River Hawks (19-27, 9-12) entered their series against Maine (18-29, 11-10) on a dismal seven-game losing streak. They didn’t just break the streak; they shattered it with a dominant road sweep.
Friday Dominance: Ace Alfred Mucciarone tossed his second complete-game shutout of the year, a 2-0 masterpiece. Remarkably, this was the second time this season he went the full nine innings against the Black Bears.
Sunday Heroics: Catcher Nicholas Solorzano single-handedly willed the team to victory in the finale. Down to his last strike in the ninth inning against Maine closer Sebastian Holt, Solorzano turned on an inside fastball for a game-winning, two-run HR to secure the 5-4 win.
