Steeler Nation is a world-wide army that follows the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers. The Six-Time Super Bowl Champions are a franchise whose tradition dictates a standard of excellence, and their fans expect nothing less year in and year out. Those very same ideals translate to the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers Game Day Preview, a guide that all Steelers fans read weekly to learn everything they need to know about their team and weekly opponent!
Mike Drakulich, the man behind Pittsburgh SportsNation (@PghSportsNation), who covers both Pitt football and the Steelers for NGSC Sports, brings you inside the huddle with The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary, Game Prediction, Broadcast Information, and a complete breakdown of each team. Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff!
The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
The mystique that was once the Pittsburgh Steelers is all but a memory.
They were a brutally bad franchise until Chuck Noll was hired in 1969. Upon seeing his team, Noll didn’t hold back on his opinions about what he had at Training Camp.
“The reason you’ve been losing is you’re not any good,” said Noll to his players. “You’re not fast enough, you’re not strong enough, you’re not quick enough, you’re not smart enough. I’m going to have to get rid of most of you.”
That he did, and through the draft, he built the foundation of what would become a dynasty.
By 1972 they won their first playoff game vs the Oakland Raiders, via the Immaculate Reception, but fell short the next week to the eventual undefeated and Super Bowl Champion Miami Dolphins.
Noll and his Steelers went on to win four Super Bowls in six seasons.
Pittsburgh’s identity was playing physical, intimidating football, on both offense and defense.
Those black and gold uniforms instilled fear in their opponents.
Even in the 1980’s, when the team was in transition from their Hall of Fame players retiring, the Steelers never went more than a year or two without winning a playoff game. Even when they lost, they fought to the bitter end.
The 1990’s arrived, and Noll’s run ended, and a young man who grew up in nearby Crafton, became the new head coach.
That was Bill Cowher.
Cowher’s teams were always known for their vicious style of play, as the players took on the personality of their coach, aggressive and full of confidence.
Though his team would lose in Super Bowl XXX to the Dallas Cowboys, Cowher’s work would pay off in 2005, when the Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.
Cowher would retire after 2006, and Mike Tomlin was hired to take over in the 2007 season.
The first few years of the Tomlin Era were damn good.
In his first four seasons, Pittsburgh had gone to two Super Bowls, winning XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals, and losing XVL to the Green Bay Packers. Tomlin’s playoff record was a stellar 5-2.
Since the 2010 season, Tomlin’s record in the postseason is 3-9, with two of those wins coming in 2017.
The last playoff win for the Steelers was on January 15th, 2017, when they defeated Kansas City 18-16.
Since that victory, the Steelers are 0-6 in the postseason, and have been outscored 230-148.
It is the longest playoff drought since before the 1972 season.
Intimidation in the playoffs?
Gone.
Over and over, we’ve watched the Patriots, Jaguars, Browns, Chiefs, Bills, and Ravens all having the time of their lives carving up the Steelers.
NFL analyst Kirk Herbstreit was shocked by what he witnessed in their loss to the Ravens last year.
“If I were a Steelers fan, the thing that would concern me just watching this first half… You’re in the postseason. You’re getting dominated. I don’t see any fight. I don’t see any pushback. It’s one thing to lose X-O’s against a really talented offense, but where the hell is the fight? This is the Pittsburgh Steelers! There’s nothing. They’re just going through the motions!” said Herbstreit.
Remember, even under Tomlin, when the Steelers were damn near impossible to beat in Prime Time games?
That has rode off into the sunset, too.
Pittsburgh is 0-3 this season, including last week when the Steelers were humbled 25-10 by the LA Chargers.
The defense played well, but eventually broke after Aaron Rodgers and the offense made you want to soak your eyes in chlorine water rather than watch the display of futility they put forth.
This team as it is now, is a joke. No one is scared of them, and few respect them.
Week by week, you have no idea what team is going to show up. How will the offense play? How will the defense play?
Your guess is as good as mine, and other than both coming together against the Colts two weeks ago, this team is about as inspiring to watch as an episode of Trailer wives of Morgantown.
Through the years, coaches and players have changed, but not the true culprit… the head coach.
But hey, that streak of non-losing seasons baby.
This week the Cincinnati Bengals (3-6) travel to Acrisure Stadium to take on the Steelers (5-4).
This is the same Bengals that took care of the Steelers 33-31 four weeks ago.
Joe Flacco is still at quarterback, who in that game against the Steelers, passed for 342 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He was sacked twice.
For the season, Flacco has thrown for 2,069 yards, 13 TD’s, and eight interceptions.
He’ll continue to hold down the fort until Joe Burrow returns, as he is in the 21-day practice window to be activated.
Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is 1st in the NFL with 76 receptions for 831 yards and five touchdowns. Tee Higgins is on the opposite side, and has heated up with Flacco under center, catching 32 passes for 481 yards and a team leading six touchdowns. Andrei Iosivas is utilized in the slot, and has 16 receptions for 236 yards and a touchdown.
Noah Fant has been the best tight end for Cincinnati, catching 25 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Gesicki is on IR. Drew Sample has five catches for 24 yards and a score, and the Bengals 4th tight end. Tanner Hudson, has seven catches for 61 yards and a TD.
Chase Brown has led an underwhelming rushing attack with 420 yards and two touchdowns. He’s averaging just 3.9 yards per carry, but that’s a lot better than the 2.7 he was going for a month ago.
It’s a no-brainer that stopping Chase is the top priority on defense, especially considering they allowed him to catch 16 passes for 161 yards and a score last time.
Perhaps the signing of Asante Samuel, Jr. will help the Pittsburgh secondary. Samuel was signed to the practice squad upon being medically cleared a few days ago. In April, he had a spinal fusion procedure performed right here in Pittsburgh. Several other teams were interested, but the Steelers became his choice.
“It’s God’s plan. Everything happens for a reason,” Samuel said. “I’m glad I ended up here. I’m glad everything worked out to be here. I’m blessed to be here with great coaches and great teammates.”
The Bengals defense is ranked 32nd, allowing 33.3 points a game. You can choose your avenue to attack either way, as the pass defense is 30th giving up 260.1 yards a game, and the run defense dead last, allowing 166.4 yards a game on the ground.
So, perhaps Rodgers and the offense can both rejuvenate and redeem themselves upon taking the field this Sunday.
Rodgers has passed for 1,853 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.
D.K. Metcalf has been the top receiver, pulling down 32 receptions for 502 yards and five touchdowns. Calvin Austin III has 21 catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Roman Wilson has elevated his game of late, and now has 11 catches for 149 yards and two scores. Perhaps we’ll see a deep ball to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, if he’s elevated from the practice squad.
It’s the Pittsburgh tight ends that inflict damage in the air attack, with Jonnu Smith leading the way with 26 catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Darnell Washington excels at helping in the run game, and is becoming a danger catching the ball, as he has 14 receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown. Not many corners want to see that guy running at full speed at them when he has the ball. Pat Freiermuth has picked up his game the past three weeks, and now has 22 receptions for 260 yards and three touchdowns.
Jaylen Warren continues to be a dual threat at running back, rushing for 474 yards and two touchdowns, adding 23 receptions for 214 yards and a touchdown. Kenneth Gainwell comes in to spell Warren, and is 2nd on the team with 220 yards, and has found the end zone three times. Gainwell is also 2nd on the team with 29 receptions for 123 yards. Rookie Kaleb Johnson has yet to be utilized by Tomlin, gaining just 43 yards so far.
“If the process is right, you don’t have to make any major changes or freak out,” Rodgers said after practice on Wednesday. “This is the nature of the league. There is going to be a stinker every now and then. You have to bounce back, get back to the things you do, get back into your routine and try to be better the next week.”
Well, some type of change is needed, that being play calling, execution, or elevation of play, if the Steelers have any dreams of stopping this sinking ship.
The Ravens are now one game behind them, after starting the year 1-5. Baltimore gets the luxury of playing the hapless Browns this week.
Someone other than Metcalf has to become a true threat on this team, be it Austin III, Wilson, Valdez-Scantling, Freiermuth, or Smith… someone!
“The other guys have to get open and make plays because DK is a super-talented guy,” Rodgers said. “We haven’t been able to get him the targets we’ve wanted to because he’s getting doubled every third down, basically.”
In the rushing attack, it’s time to just feed Warren the ball. The kid makes yards just about every time he touches the ball. Let him work. It’s ridiculous that he is being out-snapped by Gainwell.
“I’d love to see Jaylen on first, second or third down, but I love seeing Kenny on first, second or third down, too,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. “We have a luxury with those two guys. We have to get Jaylen more runs on first and second down and mix him in on third down, but Kenny has done a great job for us on third down.”
Only God Himself knows what Pittsburgh team will show up on Sunday afternoon.
The Steelers have the tools to be a successful team, but they consistently find ways to fail instead.
It’s been like this for far too long, and it’s a major reason why many fans have zero energy or belief in the team, and that is truly sad. Before, you were getting hyped thinking about the game all week, and when the Steelers took the field for the game you expected greatness and a victory.
This week, the defense has to get pressure on Flacco and knock him around a bit. Someone has to step up and keep Chase and Higgins from padding their stats all game long.
More than likely, this game will be like the last, and the winner will be the one that can just outscore the other.
I do expect a big bounce back game from Rodgers. He’s too good, and proud not to.
We will find out a lot about this team’s character when this game ends. The Ravens aren’t just in the rear-view mirror anymore, they’re one inch behind the car tailgating them, honking their horn and waving their middle fingers.
The Steelers can either elevate their play and beat a Bengals team that everyone else has but them, or they can assure themselves that they’ll be tied in the standings with Baltimore come Sunday evening.
Call me crazy, but I believe the Steelers will outlast the Bengals this time. Rodgers finds the end zone three times, including one to the beleaguered Metcalf. Warren will rush for a minimum of 80 yards, but could get over 100 if they are smart and feed him the ball.
Prediction: Steelers 38 Bengals 34
