In what was expected to be an offensive showdown between two NFC contenders, the Philadelphia Eagles (7-2) and Green Bay Packers (5-3-1) instead delivered a bone-chilling defensive slugfest at Lambeau Field. In the end, the Eagles’ defense, highlighted by a dominant performance from a newly acquired pass-rusher, was the difference in a 10-7 victory.
The Defense is the Story
The Eagles’ defense, under the leadership of Vic Fangio, was exceptional, particularly in the first half, which ended in a rare 0-0 tie.
- Jaelan Phillips’ Debut: In his first game since being acquired at the trade deadline, linebacker Jaelan Phillips was an immediate difference-maker. He recovered a fumble late in the first half to stifle a Packers scoring opportunity and later teamed up with Reed Blankenship to stuff Josh Jacobs on a critical 4th-and-1 attempt in the final minutes.
- The Pass Rush Wakes Up: The defense racked up three sacks on Jordan Love and forced two total turnovers, giving the Green Bay offense little room to operate throughout the night.
The Game-Defining Plays
Points were an absolute premium, with the Eagles not getting on the board until a Jake Elliott 39-yard field goal in the third quarter. The only touchdown of the night for the defending Super Bowl Champions came in the fourth quarter on a two-play sequence that broke the game open:
- Saquon Barkley’s Spark: Facing a 3rd-and-7, Saquon Barkley took a short pass, spun past a defender, and burst up the sideline for a 41-yard catch-and-run, putting the Eagles deep in scoring territory.
- DeVonta Smith’s Touchdown: On the very next play, Jalen Hurts launched a deep ball to DeVonta Smith, who went up over his defender in the end zone for a spectacular 36-yard touchdown catch, giving Philadelphia a 10-0 lead.
Packers’ Missed Opportunities
The Packers’ lone score came on a Josh Jacobs 6-yard touchdown run with under six minutes remaining, cutting the lead to 10-7. However, Green Bay struggled with penalties, injuries, and execution at the worst times. Their final chance to tie the game ended in dramatic fashion when Brandon McManus’s 64-yard field goal attempt fell short as the clock expired.
The Eagles’ win, while certainly not pretty on the offensive side of the ball, shows the grit of a championship-caliber defense, which allowed them to escape the frigid North with a critical road victory.
