The USF Bulls are coming off their bye week after starting the season with a 3-1 record through their first four games. During that time, most college football teams began conference play. The Bulls will open their conference schedule against the Charlotte 49ers. Charlotte enters the matchup at 1-3, with one conference game already in the books. Last week, the 49ers fell at home to the Rice Owls, 28-17. On the other hand, USF dominated South Carolina State, cruising to a 63-14 victory.
This game will carry a special theme, as the Bulls will be wearing throwback uniforms — their original jerseys and helmets from 1997, the inaugural season of the program. In addition, the school will induct several former Bulls into the program’s Hall of Fame.
Charlotte’s lone victory came in week three against the Monmouth Hawks, but it was closer than expected, a narrow seven-point win. In their three losses, the 49ers have been defeated by double digits each time. In their season opener, they gave up nearly 600 total yards to Appalachian State, including 404 through the air. That performance raises the concern that they may struggle to contain USF’s offense similarly.
Offensively, Charlotte has not found consistency either. Although they had a decent showing against Rice, turnovers have been a recurring issue, costing them games. That’s a dangerous trend, as USF has thrived on forcing turnovers during its first four contests.
The Bulls, meanwhile, have exceeded expectations so far. Few believed they would take down Boise State and Florida, but they proved otherwise. Their only loss came to the No. 2-ranked Miami Hurricanes. This matchup gives USF a chance to fine-tune things heading into the heart of conference play. While Charlotte has struggled, the Bulls cannot afford to overlook them — especially with an undefeated North Texas team looming on the schedule next. North Texas is off this week and will surely be watching. Expect USF to lean on a game plan similar to what worked so well against South Carolina State.
Kickoff is set for Friday, October 3rd, at 7 p.m. inside Raymond James Stadium. The weather should be cooler than it was during the South Carolina State game, making for a more comfortable night for fans. Beyond the action on the field, the throwback uniforms and Hall of Fame ceremony add to the occasion. Among those being honored is Jim Leavitt, the program’s first head coach, though he will not be present in person. It promises to be a special night — one with history, celebration, and an opportunity for the Bulls to begin conference play with a win.
