Team Europe, captained by Luke Donald, clinched the 2025 Ryder Cup with a thrilling 15-13 victory over Team USA at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. The win marks a historic achievement, as it is Europe’s first victory on American soil since the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012, and makes Donald only the second European captain to win both home and away.
European Dominance on Days One and Two
Europe set the stage for its victory with a commanding performance over the first two days of four-ball and foursomes matches. Capitalizing on strong play and key putting, the visitors built a substantial lead, taking an imposing 11.5 – 4.5 advantage into Sunday’s singles matches—the largest lead Europe has ever held entering the final session. Standout players for Europe over the team sessions included:
- Tommy Fleetwood (4-0-0 in team matches)
- Rory McIlroy (3-0-1 in team matches)
- Jon Rahm (3-0-0 in team matches)
- Tyrrell Hatton (3-0-0 in team matches)
Team USA struggled, with several top players failing to secure points. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, in particular, lost all four of his team matches.
Sunday Singles: The American Charge
The United States, needing 10 points for the biggest comeback in Ryder Cup history, mounted an incredible fightback in Sunday’s singles matches. The U.S. won the day’s session 8.5 – 3.5 (tying a record for singles points in the current format) and quickly closed the gap, turning the leaderboard red.
Key American victories included:
- New York native Cameron Young defeating Justin Rose 1 up in the opening match, igniting the comeback.
- Justin Thomas beating the previously undefeated Tommy Fleetwood 1 up.
- Scottie Scheffler finally earning his first point by defeating Rory McIlroy 1 up.
- Xander Schauffele emphatically beating European stalwart Jon Rahm 4 & 3.
The Deciding Moments
Despite the furious American rally, Europe’s large cushion ultimately proved enough.
- Rookie sensation Ludvig Åberg delivered a crucial full point for Europe, defeating Patrick Cantlay 2 & 1 to move the European total to 13.5.
- The decisive moment came when Shane Lowry faced Russell Henley in the eighth singles match. Trailing late, Lowry rallied and, needing a half-point to ensure Europe retained the Cup, drained a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to tie the match, securing the 14th point required to retain the trophy.
- Moments later, Tyrrell Hatton tied his match with Collin Morikawa, earning the half-point that pushed Europe to 15 points and an outright victory.
The final score stood at Europe 15, USA 13, sealing a second consecutive victory for the Europeans and an unforgettable week of golf at Bethpage Black.
