Volleyball
While Marietta won’t have an undefeated regular season again, the Pioneers have still impressed on the court as his week they’ve improved to 8-1. Coming off a loss to the #1 Juniata College, the Pioneers visited New Concord, Ohio for the Muskingum Invitational.
On Friday the Pioneers swept the W&J Presidents winning 25-11, 25-16, and 25-20. On Saturday, the Pioneers were challenged as Case Western. In set one the score was tied 21 all but Marietta came away with four straight to win 25-21. In set two, Case Western kept the score within a point, eventually taking the lead 27-26. However, a useful timeout gave the Pios at advantage winning 30-28. Marietta finished off the game taking the third set 25-20.
Marietta appeared to have the MSJ Cougars in the first set winning 25-12. However, the second set was close with the Cougars having a 25-23 lead. However, the Pios scored three straight after a final timeout ti win 26-25. The Cougars went on a four-kill streak in the third set and won 25-21. After dropping their fifth set of the season, Marietta was able to finish things off in the fourth winning 25-14.
Be sure to pack the BanJo as the Pioneers make their 2025 home debut hosting Denison University this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Football
Marietta won their home opener in a night game versus Otterbein University. Marietta continues their winning streak over Otterbein; however, Otterbein gave them a run for their money. The Cardinals had some successful early drives taking a 10-0 lead. Vante’ Hodges quickly shortened their lead scoring on the first play of the next drive with a 65-yard run.
Marietta went on a streak in the second quarter, with Antwon Johnson connecting with John Sierputowski for a touchdown, Hodges added a 66-yard rush for a second touchdown, and Johnson himself rushed for a third touchdown. Otterbein did manage to score making the halftime score 27-17.
In the second half, the teams traded touchdowns. Otterbein scored first closing the lead to 3, but Johnson responded with a second rushing touchdown. Otterbein scored again, however Hodges returned for a third touchdown this time being 64 yards. In total Hodges impressive night ended with 306 yards on the ground. Up 40-31, the Pioneers finished the night when Johnson found Matthew Krutowski for a second passing touchdown, taking a 47-31 win. Marietta is off next week, but they’ll return on September 27th in Colombus vs Capital University.
Men’s Soccer
The Pioneer men’s soccer team is 3-3-1, as they have gone .500 in the past week. Last weekend the team traveled to Lexington, Kentuckey to face Transylvania University and Hanover College in the Transylvania Tournament. Marietta beat the home team 4-3 with Parker Bolin notching two goals in the win. However, they were shut out vs Hanover losing 4-0.
In their home stand, Marietta hosted Mount St. Joseph University and Franciscan University. Bolin added his 7th goal of the season vs MSJ as the Pioneers won 3-2 with the game winner coming from Connor Heramb. Bolin added an 8th goal vs Franciscan, however ultimately lost to the Barons 2-1.
Marietta is home this Wednesday vs Case Western at 4:30 p.m. and they’ll be on the road this Saturday vs Allegheny College.
Women’s Soccer
The lady Pios have been hot since the Marietta Soccer Classic, not losing a game since. Marietta shut out Washington & Jefferson 1-0 for their first win and later tied with Allegheny College 1-1. This past week, Marietta dominated Bethany College with ten shots on goal vs three. Overall, the Pios drove in three with Bethany scoring one late for a 3-1 win. During this weekend’s alumni BBQ, the Marietta shut out Transylvania 2-0.
This week Marietta hosts Chatham at 7:00 p.m. and this Saturday they’ll visit Mount. St Joseph at 1:00 p.m.
Golf
Marietta golf made appearances at the Mount Union Fall Invitational this past week. The women’s golf team finished 7th out of 12 clubs at the Tannenhauf Golf Club. The men’s team finished 4th out of 15 teams. In August, the men’s team traveled to Wooster and finished 4th of 11 in the Wooster Gatorade Collegiate which was won by Mount Union.
The men’s and women’s teams will be back on September 21st for the JCU Donald Ross Invitational.
