What started as nine teams chasing a dream is now down to one. The Louisville Cardinals (40-22) are heading to Omaha to play for a national championship starting on Friday when they meet Oregon State. The Cardinals, who hosted a super regional last weekend, defeated fellow ACC member Miami to make the trip to “America’s heartland.”
This will be the first trip for Louisville to Omaha since 2019 and their sixth trip overall. For the league, this marks the 19th consecutive tournament in which at least one team from the conference is playing for a national championship. The ACC has placed 35 teams in the past 18 CWS. In the decisive game three vs the Hurricanes, the Louisville bats banged out 10 hits. It marks the 34th time this year they have been able to do that. Jake Munroe and Taque Davis had two-hit games.
The Oregon State Beavers (47-14-1) are back in Omaha for the eighth time in program history. In the clinching victory over Florida State, the Beavers hit five home runs and have hit 103 for the season. It marks the second straight season with at least 100 home runs. The Beavers scored 13 of their 14 runs in game three on Sunday in the first three innings of the contest. It has been quite a season for Oregon State, which ends by making it to the College World Series as an independent for the first time.
There is coaching news to report. First, after playing for a spot in the College World Series on Monday night, the Duke Blue Devils are now looking for a new head coach. Chris Pollard is heading to Virginia to take over that program. He becomes the 16th coach in Cavaliers history. He spent 13 seasons at Duke, compiling a 420-296 overall record. The 420 wins are the most by a Duke head coach in the program’s history. He had 46 players drafted, 28 All-ACC selections, nine Freshman All-Americans, and seven All-Americans. This will be Pollard’s fourth college baseball head coaching job.
James Ramsey has been named the 13th head coach in Georgia Tech’s history. He replaces Danny Hall, who stepped down when the season ended. Ramsey has been an assistant coach at GT since 2019 and was named associate head coach in 2021. He is being credited with helping the Yellow Jackets win their first regular-season championship in 14 years. In seven years with the program, Georgia Tech has led the league in batting average (.308), hits (3,961). doubles (796), on-base percentage (.409), OPS (.918), and sacrifice flies (208). Seven Tech hitters have been named All-Americans, and five have been named Freshman All-Americans. This season, the Yellow Jackets led the nation with 149 doubles.
