The 2025 U.S. Open will be taking place at Oakmont Country Club, which will be the toughest test for professional golfers. The biggest question is, will the number one player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, win? He is coming off three wins in the last four starts, including the second major of the year, the PGA Championship, and the Memorial Tournament. Also in the field is Rory McIlroy, fresh off completing the career grand slam, winning the 2025 Masters. He has struggled with driver woes, which have led to a subpar performance lately in tournaments. The tournament will take place in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, which is near Pittsburgh. The course opened in 1856 and has gone through many different transitions. The course will be playing at 7,372 yards and is a par 70. It has been set up slightly longer than in previous U.S. Opens.
Just like in the past majors, we will see LIV Tour players. The biggest star of that group is Bryson DeChambeau, who did well at the Masters and PGA Championship. He will be defending his championship as he won this tournament last year at Pinehurst No. 2, and he has won the US Open once before, winning in 2020 at Winged Foot. There are eight notable players that we will not see in the field this week at Oakmont. Let’s start with Rickie Fowler, who received an exemption to play in the PGA Championship, and he missed the cut. Fowler also missed the cuts at the Charles Schwab and the Memorial Championship. The next player with a similar fate to Fowler is Max Homa, who has also been badly. One of the bigger LIV Tour players that will not be in the field is Sergio Garcia.
The other five players are Luke Clanton, Billy Horschel, Will Zalatoris, Alex Noren, and Tiger Woods. Woods is having surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles that he suffered in March. It will probably be a while before we see Woods again. If Rory McIlroy can finish in the top 10 at the U.S. Open, it will be a record seven straight years, which has been done three previous times by Ben Hogan between 1950-56. Finishing in the top 10 in the U.S. Open is very hard. The major reason is that the course is set up so difficult, with long roughs and further distances. That is the aspect that most golf fans want to see him finish in another top 10 at the U.S. Open.
This is the third major on the PGA calendar, with the only major left being the Open Championship, which will take place in July. The ones that most will focus on will be Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Bryson DeChambeau. It will test them and the other 153 players. This is the hardest of the four majors to win and the last one that will be on American soil. At one time, this was the second major of the year, but the PGA calendar has changed. Oakmont, with this U.S. Open, will also host other majors on both the PGA and LPGA tours. Let’s see how the tournament goes as it starts on the 12th.
