What do hockey players do on their off day you asked? Well if you are a member of the Boston Fleet, you spend an hour and a half in Lowell, MA. doing some community work. Three team members, Emily Brown, Emma Söderberg, and Theresa Schafzahl took time away from their busy schedule to show up at John J Janis Rink to spend time with a youth hockey team in Lowell.
The Lowell Junior Hawks had the chance to be on the ice with the three members of the team. They got the chance to do some shooting and skating drills, and basically hang out with the Fleet players. Smiles abound from everyone. After the clinic was over, the players spent time signing sticks and taking pictures with those junior players they spent time on the ice with.
When all was said and done, I had the chance to speak with Emily Brown for a few minutes. She called the clinic ” Very fun” and loves the energy that the kids bring to something like that. She said it is a great way to give back to a community that has been very nice to the team. The stretch run for the team is about to begin. Emily was asked about the differences between this year’s team and the one that came so close to winning it all last spring. She said “Every year is different” The group is different as well.” Last season the Fleet took advantage of the international break to reset everything. That break is coming up in April.
So too is the trade deadline for the league. Emily was asked if the team needed to add at the trade deadline. While she admitted that those decisions “Are a little over my pay scale,” she did say she likes this team and thinks there is enough in the room to make another run at the Walker Cup this spring.
The Fleet have 11 games left on the year, eight home games with one being played in St. Louis. They have played well at Tsongas Center this season (4-2-0-1). The period of adjustment that the team went through last year in the building is over. As Emily said “We did not know what to expect” with a new building and surroundings. She is from Minnesota where hockey is a big deal. Since being in the Boston area she has learned that hockey is a popular sport in the Northeast as well. She, like the rest of the team, would love the shot at being a part of the winning of titles that has taken place since 2001.
