
With the second half of the ACC schedule in full swing, some schools are looking ahead to next year and beyond. The newest school to take that approach is the Florida State Seminoles which will be looking for a new coach after the current head coach Leonard Hamilton announced his resignation which will take effect when the season comes to an end. Heading into Tuesday’s night game at home vs Notre Dame, Hamilton had the fifth-winningest record in the league at 434-290. Overall, he ranks 12th among Division I coaches with 634 wins.
Now for the weekly look at the rankings. Duke has the longest active winning streak in Division 1 at 15 games. They are ranked #2 in the Association Press Top 25 poll, and USA Today Coaches poll. Clemson is at #21 in the USA Today Coaches poll. In the NET rankings. Duke is at #3, Louisville at #29, Clemson at #30, Pittsburgh at #35, SMU at #41, and North Carolina at #45. In the KenPom rankings, Duke is at #2, Clemson at #27, Louisville at #30, Pittsburgh at #36, UNC at #40, and SMU at #42.
Boston College (10-11, 2-8) received a career-high 31 points from this week’s Co-ACC Player of the Week Donald Hand Jr. It helped the Eagles to a win on Saturday over Florida State. Hand is the leading scorer at 15.5 points rebounder at 6.7. He is one of three players to be among the top 15 in the league in both categories.
The Louisville Cardinals (16-6, 9-2) have been having quite a season so far. One of those that has contributed to the success is senior guard Chucky Hepburn. He leads the ACC in four categories. Assists with 140, assists per game at 6.36, steals with 53, and steals per game at 2.41. He is also ranked in the top 15 in the nation in the same four categories.
The Pittsburgh Panthers (14-7, 5-5) are now 10-3 at the Petersen Events Center after Monday night’s loss to Virginia (11-12, 4-8). Heading into that game, the Panthers had scored 80 or more points in nine of the 12 home games played. They were averaging 86.8 points at home for the entire year while shooting 51.3% 361-of-704 from the field. On Monday night, the ability to put the ball in the basket was a problem for the Panthers. They would shoot 41.9% (18-of-43), and 30% from 3-point range (6-of-20). They scored only 18 points in the paint, and only 19 for the entire first half. Guard Ishmael Leggett was the only double-figure scorer with 17.
Congratulations to Syracuse (10-12, 4-7) junior guard J.J. Starlings as he went over 1,000 points for his career on Saturday night in a win over California. Starlings went for 18 on the night and now has 1,110 career points.
While changes are ahead for the Miami Hurricanes (5-17, 1-10) program, it has not stopped guard Matthew Cleveland from putting up some numbers of late. In their victory over Notre Dame on Saturday, Cleveland had 20 points. It was his fifth straight 20-point game. In his last 12 games, Cleveland has nine 20-point performances.
Fighting Irish (10-11, 4-6) sophomore guard Markus Burton averaged 22.3 points per game in January, second among all ACC players. The only player with a higher average is this week’s Co-Player and Rookie of the Week Cooper Flagg who averaged 25.4 a game. Burton was fourth among all Power Conference players.
