The halfway point of the conference schedule has been played and the Bryant College Bulldogs finished the first half with a two-game lead on the rest of the field. There is a logjam for fifth place with three teams tied for that position. The second half of the season should be good with teams jockeying for position and looking for home-court advantage as we head toward March. Let’s see where we are as the second half looms.
The league boasts one team inside the top 150 in the NET Ranking. That team is Bryant with an undefeated record of 8-0 in league play. Overall, the Bulldogs are 12-9. This is the first time that Bryant has been 8-0 in league play and the first time they have won eight in a row in America East. Last week, they took their unbeaten streak on the road and came away with wins over UMBC and NJIT. As the second half begins, they are in the driver’s seat for a regular season title and home court throughout the playoffs.
The other team that had a good week is the Binghamton Bearcats (11-12, 3-5). They too went 2-0 for the week by taking care of business at home beating the Vermont Catamounts for the first time in quite a while. A 22-game losing streak was snapped on Thursday night too. The AE Player of the Week had a lot to do with the win over Vermont and the successful week for the team. Sophomore forward Gavin Walsh led the Bearcats to wins on Thursday night when he posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Then on Saturday at UAlbany, Walsh went for 15 and 15 in helping the Bearcats to a victory over the Great Danes. For the two games, Walsh averaged 16 points and 14 boards and the two double-doubles were his ninth and tenth of the season.
For the second week in a row, congratulations are in order. NJIT’s graduate student Tim Moore reached the 1,000-point milestone last Thursday night in a home victory over the River Hawks, where he went for a double-double of 24 points and a career-best 15 rebounds to reach that milestone. He had 16 of those 24 points in the second half as the Highlanders pulled away from UMass Lowell to pick up an 83-62 win. It would be a 1-1 week for NJIT as they would lose to the conference leaders on Saturday by a 92-70 score.
For the ninth time this season, UMass Lowell (15-8, 4-4) freshman guard Martin Somerville earned the AE Rookie of the Week award. In that loss to the Highlanders, Somerville went for 15 points and seven rebounds. On Saturday, the River Hawks bounced back with a victory over UMBC and Somerville filled out the stats sheet with 15 points, three boards, three assists, and two steals. He was one of four players that finished that game in double-figures. The River Hawks bounced back from losing by 21 to NJIT (5-18, 2-6), to defeat UMBC (11-12, 3-5) by 16, 83-67.
The one streak that was not snapped over the weekend was Maine’s (14-8, 6-2) losing streak to Vermont (12-11, 5-3). On Saturday, the Black Bears made their way to Patrick Gym in Burlington, VT. and suffered a 55-49 loss. Maine would shoot just 36.5% from the field and only 30% from deep. The losing streak now stands at 29 straight games.
Next week, we will be back with a look at how the second half began.
