For the second time in 24 hours, a big-name star has been traded ahead of the 2025 NBA trade deadline. The big name moving is Sacramento Kings guard DeAaron Fox. Reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the trade goes as follows:
San Antonio Spurs Receive:
- DeAaron Fox
- Jordan McLaughlin
Sacramento Kings Receive:
- Zach Lavine
- Sidy Cissoko
- Three 1st round picks (2025 CHA, 2027 SAS, & 2031 MIN)
- Three 2nd round picks (2025 CHI, 2028 DEN, & 2028 own back)
Chicago Bulls receive:
- Zach Collins
- Tre Jones
- Kevin Huerter
- Own 2025 1st round pick back from SAS
For the Spurs, found the perfect point guard to pair with Victor Wembanyama. Averaging 25.0 PPG, 5.0 APG, and 6.1 RPG, Fox will not only be able to complement Wemby’s game but give the Spurs a much-needed second option. With reports that Fox had not signed an extension with the Kings, the possibility of him leaving come free agency next summer, and the big three not working, the Kings made the right move.
When the initial rumors of Fox wanting to go to San Antonio specifically, it was only a matter of time before the move would happen. With Wembanyama having a great second season, the Spurs are set to make a push for the playoffs. Unless another move happens before the deadline, Fox will also be able to learn from one of the most legendary point guards in NBA history Chris Paul, only adding to the potential Fox and Wembanyama will have as a duo. Even though he was set to become a free agent next summer, Fox will more than likely re-sign with the Spurs.
For the Kings, they land Chicago’s sharpshooting guard Zach Lavine. After missing out on Lavine several years ago on free agency, the team lands the guard and reunites him with DeMar DeRozan. While there are questions given how the two played together in Chicago over the span of three seasons, the Kings land one of the most underrated players this season. Averaging 24.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and 4.5 APG on career highs from the field and three, Lavine gets a chance to compete on a team with legitimate playoff aspirations.
Giving up their star guard, the Kings also land three first-round picks that could be very valuable. The Charlotte Hornets’ 2025 first-round pick will more than likely land in the top 10 in what is a stacked draft. With it being unknown if the new-look Kings will work, their 2027 first-round pick could be a high pick as well. The 2031 first from the Minnesota Timberwolves (Via SAS) could land high as well with questions about the future direction of the team.
For the Bulls, they get what they have been wanting for several seasons: getting off Zach Lavine’s contract. Set to make $43 million this season, $45 million next season, and $48 million in the 2026-27 season, Lavine’s contact was seen as one of the most in-tradeable contacts in the league. Moving on from Lavine, the Bulls can move into the rebuild they were inevitably heading for. In addition, the odds of a Nikola Vucevic trade are likely to go up just days before the trade deadline.
Receiving promising players like Tre Jones and Kevin Huerter, the Bulls have new players they can work into their new era of basketball or flip for potential draft capital in the future. Also receiving their first-round pick back from the Spurs as a part of their infamous 2021 DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade, the team can comfortably play without the fear of losing their pick in a stacked draft.
With the 2025 NBA trade deadline just days away, it is expected that more big names will be on the move. Names including Brandon Ingram, Jimmy Butler, and Nikola Vucevic have all been in rumors. Seeing some of the bigger name trade targets being moved already, it’s expected more moves will be on the way.
