Steeler Nation is a world-wide army that follows the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers. The Six-Time Super Bowl Champions are a franchise whose tradition dictates a standard of excellence, and their fans expect nothing less year in and year out. Those very same ideals translate to the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers Game Day Preview, a guide that all Steelers fans read weekly to learn everything they need to know about their team and weekly opponent!
Mike Drakulich, the man behind Pittsburgh SportsNation (@PghSportsNation), who covers both Pitt football and the Steelers for NGSC Sports, brings you inside the huddle for both teams providing all NFL fans with The PSN Game Commentary, Game Prediction, Broadcast Information, and a complete breakdown of each team.
The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
When the NFL schedule was released earlier in the year, just about everyone pointed to one particularly brutal stretch of games that would decide the Pittsburgh Steelers season.
Despite all the preaching about “Player Safety” from the NFL, the league found it fit to schedule the Steelers to play three games in eleven days in December.
If that wasn’t ridiculous enough, those games were set against Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Kansas City, the first two of which were on the road.
Thankfully, Pittsburgh entered those games with a record of 10-3, and are still in the playoffs, despite dropping the first two to the Eagles and Ravens.
It certainly did not help Pittsburgh to play those games without the services of their best receiver in George Pickens, defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi, and safety DeShon Elliot, who was the team leader in tackles, and is an integral part of this defense being efficient against the pass and run.
Reeling from a two game losing streak, and now tied with Baltimore for the lead in the AFC North, the two time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs (14-1) will visit Acrisure Stadium on Wednesday at 1:00 PM, which also happens to be Christmas Day (for most of you).
As dreary as many feel about the consecutive losses, especially by a combined score of 61-20, there is a ray of sunshine beaming down for Steelers fans, as Santa will gift Pittsburgh with the return of Pickens, Ogunjobi, and Elliot, whom will all be welcomed with open arms.
Unfortunately, Pittsburgh will be missing starting corner Joey Porter, Jr., so Cory Trice, Jr. will have to elevate his game as “next man up”, and help the secondary keep the Chiefs offense contained.
As you know, the Chiefs are lead by Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, who isn’t having his normal type of season numbers wise, but he has been heating up of late. Through 14 games, he’s thrown for 3,608 yards, with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Mahomes has been sacked 36 times, despite rushing for 295 yards and two scores.
His top weapons in the passing game can be a number of receivers on any given night, but Xavier Worthy leads the receivers with 51 receptions for 559 yards and five touchdowns. DeAndre Hopkins was acquired via trade, and has played well, catching 39 passes for 430 yards and four TD’s. Hollywood Brown returned last week for the first time all year, and caught five passes for 45 yards. Justin Watson has 19 receptions for 224 yards, while former Steeler Juju Smith-Schuster has 15 catches for 209 yard and two touchdowns.
Travis Kelce is the top tight end, leading the team with 89 catches for 739 yards and just two touchdowns. It’s Noah Gray who has been the man in the RedZone for Mahomes, catching 38 passes for 430 yards and five touchdowns.
Isiah Pacheco is the lead back, but is trying to regain his form after missing nine games with a leg injury. He’s rushed for 292 yards and one touchdown, while Kareem Hunt is the great leader with 708 yards and six touchdowns.
Samaje Perine doesn’t run much, but he is dangerous as a 3rd down back and out of the backfield, catching 25 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown.
The Chiefs offense is 11th, averaging 23.7 points per game, while their defense is ranked 3rd, allowing just 18.5 points a game. KC’s secondary can be exploited, as they are 17th in the league, giving up 215.8 yards through the air.
Russell Wilson hasn’t had it easy without Pickens, but he has done as much as he can with a receiving corps not having anyone near a #2 receiver behind Pickens as their top playmaker.
Calvin Austin III has elevated his game of late, and so far he’s caught 32 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns, but he’s best suited as a #3 on just about any team.
Mike Wiliams has yet to be utilized as much as many wish he were, especially downfield, and 3rd round pick Roman Wilson has yet to see any meaningful action this year, despite the struggles at receiver.
Pat Freiermuth should play a big part of this game, as he is 2nd on the team with 50 receptions for 508 yards and a team leading six touchdowns. Darnell Washington and MyCole Pruitt at tight end will also be used in a variety of ways.
Many have wondered why Freiermuth has caught just nine passes for just 86 yards during the three game absence of Pickens, the thinking that he should be much more involved as one of the better weapons Pittsburgh does have.
“It’s just not a reality of how the game is played,” said Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. “I only say that because I think Pat — and you can ask him this; this isn’t just coach-speak — you’re the primary (receiver) on a lot of (play calls), (but) obviously the coverage dictates a lot. And then other than things, if the quarterback sees something and likes a better match-up, that’s where the ball goes.
“Pat has helped us in recent weeks. Pat has been pretty damn good in the red zone. When guys get the game plan, it’s not like you’re icing somebody out. It’s just whether the ball finds them or not. You may be the primary, may get a different look, something they break down, a guy gets off schedule where you’re not necessarily going to the primary target. I think Pat’s had an excellent season.”
Pickens, who leads the team with 55 catches for 850 yards, and three touchdowns, will be a welcome sight on an offense that badly needs his play-making ability.
“Obviously, he’s been our leading wideout and been one of the better wideouts around the league the whole season,” said Smith. “That certainly helps. You want your best guys out there if they’re available. So, if he can go, it’d be nice to have him back.”
To stop Mahomes, the defense will have to play much better than they have the past month. It’s understandable that the numbers weren’t good with Elliot out, but this has been a trend that started well before he was hurt. Far too many blown coverages and missed tackles have plagued this team, over and over.
“You’re always working to fix some problems because you always have problems,” Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said in regards to communication breakdowns. “This just showed up last week, so we have to get it fixed.”
The Chiefs are a team that thrives, like the Steelers, in one score games, so it will be the little things that will define this game, in addition to turnovers, and making splash plays on offense, and getting off the field on 3rd downs on defense.
“If you’re in the vicinity of where you need to be, there’s less chance for that error,” said Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward. “We’ve got to clean that up. We’ve got to get back to playing our ball. I’m looking forward to doing that. … We’ve got to rely on what we got into: It’s your fundamentals, it’s your technique, it’s your execution of plays. It’s a mixture of all of that and remembering that if one guy does his job, then we can rely on everybody doing his job.”
It will be who can outshine the other when it comes down to Wilson vs Mahomes, which is something Wilson is looking forward to.
“You understand that you know when he’s going to make plays, we have to make them, too,” Wilson said. “We’ve got to find ways to make them and do different things. I’m excited about who we are. It’s not just one versus one, though. It’s 11 versus 11. That’s the great part about this game. That’s part that I love more than anything else, and we have to respond great in all three phases.
“They’re great in all three phases. We are, too, when we’re on our stuff, and so we’re excited about that opportunity to do that in front of our fans.”
This will be a much different Pittsburgh team with most of their best players finally all playing, Joey Porter, Jr., aside.
If the Steelers are the team they expect to be, this is a game where they respond to the adversity they have faced in a big way.
The AFC North is still theirs to win, and they control their own destiny in winning it. The easiest way would be winning this game and next week against Cincinnati. They could lose to KC and still win the division if they beat the Bengals next week and the Ravens lose to either the Texans or Browns. The crazy thing is, if the Steelers beat the Chiefs, and lose to the Bengals, and the Ravens lose to Houston, but beat Cleveland, then Baltimore wins the division.
I have an idea…take the horse by the reins, and leave nothing to chance. Man up, be the team you envision yourself being, and enter the playoffs at 12-5, and begin prepping for a home playoff game.
The defense has to step up. The level of play from the highest paid unit in the NFL is utterly unacceptable, and it’s time to get back to the team we watched earlier this year.
Pressure on Mahomes is a must, and gang tackling and being in the right position will equally important.
With Pickens back the offense should look much more explosive and efficient. Keeping the Chiefs defense honest in having to account for the playmaking abilities of Pickens should open up the run game for Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren to exploit, and if that duo does well, then a few splash plays via play action could be the big difference in stopping this two game skid.
Expect a great game, that will come down to whomever decides to rise to the occasion in the 4th quarter, where both teams are comfortable being when the game is on the line.
I like Santa to make SteelerNation a joyful place on Christmas, while the Chiefs head back home with a lump of coal on their stockings.
Pickens has a big game in his return, and he leads Pittsburgh to their 11th win, and the cusp of securing the AFC North title.

Passing Yards: 2,129 | TD Passes: 15 | INT’s: 4 | Sacked: 24
Rushing Yards: 84 | Rushing TD’s: 1

Rushing Yards: 281 | Rushing TD’s: 5

Receptions: 30 | Receiving Yards: 256 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Jaylen Warren | #30

Rushing Yards: 419 | Rushing TD’s: 1
Receptions: 33 | Receiving Yards: 269 | Receiving TD’s: 0

Receptions: 12 | Receiving Yards: 80 | Receiving TD’s: 0
