The USF Bulls are heading to a postseason bowl game for the second year in a row. Last year they won the Boca Raton Bowl beating the Syracuse Orange 45-0. The Bulls hold the record for the largest shutout score in a bowl game in the NCAA. This year, they are heading to the islands of Hawaii and will be playing in the Hawaii Bowl. Their opponent is the San Jose State Spartans. Once again, the Bulls finished with a 6-6 record and the Spartans come into this game with a 7-5 record. San Jose State plays in the Mountain West conference the winner of the conference the Boise State Broncos in the college football playoff the first 12-team playoff. This will be a good matchup for both teams let see how both teams got here.
The San Jose Spartans played in this bowl game last year but lost to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Spartans got off to a good start to their 2024 season going 3-0. The first loss they had came in overtime and they only lost by two points to the Washington State Cougars. After that loss, they would win two of the next three games. SJSU’s next loss would not come until they played the Boise State. They would go 1-1 in their last two games. The way they got their wins was by having a multi-dimensional offense. Most of the offense came via the passing game. In their five losses, the problem was the defense. The USF Bulls getting back Bryum Brown will be a big challenge for the Spartans.
The USF Bulls won two out of their first two games. Both losses came as blowouts to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Miami Hurricanes. It would take the Bulls until week seven to get their third win. In their final five games, USF got three wins to become bowl-eligible. Many of their fans thought they would win their final game versus the Rice Owls. The Owls outplayed them and kept them from winning near the end of the game. Starting the year, the Bulls had Bryum Brown after he had a successful 2023. Brown got hurt in the Tulane Green Wave game and he did not play in the last eight games. The latest news is that he is ready to play after suffering a leg injury. Just like the Spartans, the Bulls relied on their offense for many of their wins.
The Hawaii Bowl will take place on Christmas Eve December 24th with kickoff time set for 8 P.M. EST. 3 P.M. Hawaii time. The game will take place in the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, home of the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The Spartans are trying to avenge their loss last year in this bowl game. The Bulls are looking to get their second straight bowl win. It will be interesting to see which defense will show up and stop the other offense. Either way, how cool is it for a college kid to play a bowl game in beautiful Hawaii?
