It’s that time of the year when the second Saturday sparks the Army-Navy game. This is more than just a football game. This is one of the greatest rivalries in college football. This is the first time these two teams have been in the same conference but it will not be a conference game. The AAC added the Army Black Knights before the start of the football season. In their first year, the Black Knights won the conference championship defeating the Tulane Green Wave, 35-14. This game will determine who wins the Commander in Chiefs’ Trophy. Unfortunately, the Black Knights did not make the college football playoffs. Most players are getting ready for an offseason trying out for the draft, or they are finished playing college football. The kids in this game will be defending our freedom.
There are some traditions for the Army-Navy game. It starts with spirit spots. This is where the cadets from each academy smack-talk each other. The most common ones are “Go Army Beat Navy” or “Go Navy Beat Army.” The next one is the pregame flyover. One of the coolest aspects about going to live football games is to see the flyover. This game is awesome because both teams are represented during the flyover. The prisoner exchange is another cool thing that the academies do with each other. Some cadets attend the opposite academy and before the game, the prisoners march for their rivals’ side of the stadium so they can watch the game with their comrades-in-arms and other fans. The March On is where both teams march in true military fashion.
The next one is Honoring the Fallen. This happens after the game because no matter who wins both teams sing their alma mater. The team that loses sings first, and the winner sings second. The last thing is that the current President of the United States of America attends the game. It will be interesting to see what happens in this year’s Army-Navy game. President-elect Donald Trump has said he will be in attendance and we will have to see if current US President, Joe Biden will be in attendance. This is what makes the game so different from a normal college football game. These two teams are enemies for the game but after the game, they will join and defend our freedoms.
The Army-Navy game will kick off at 3 PM. EST at Northwest Stadium home of the Washington Commanders, formerly the Redskins. The Army Black Knights will be wearing all-black uniforms and black helmets. Their helmets will have a white club on them. This will be in honor of the 101st Airborne Division that was in action during World War II during the 1944 Battle of the Bulge. The Navy Midshipmen will be in all-white uniforms with white helmets. They will be honoring VF-61 the fighting squadron known as the Jolly Rogers the most lethal squadron in the history of the Navy. We will see how the game plays out. The Black Knights have only one loss in 2024. This is one game that you should not miss whether in person or on television.
