As the second week of summer camp gets underway for the Boston College Eagles. The pre-season watch lists continued to come in for members of the team. Two more watch lists both on offense have arrived. One is a running back, while the other is an offensive lineman.
The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the best center in college football. It is also an award that has a charitable connection to it. Over five million dollars has been raised for the Boomer Esiason Foundation since the inception of it. The award is named after Dave Rimington who was a consensus first-team All-American while at the University of Nebraska in 1981 & 1982. He was and still is the only two-time winner of this trophy.
Drew Kendall is a red-shirt junior from Norwell, Massachusetts. He has started 24 of 25 games for the Eagles. Last year, Kendall was the center for 881 offensive plays run by the unit. He was on the field for every snap in 10 of the 13 games played by BC. Drew was the anchor of an offensive line that was very good at running the ball ranking 13th in FBS and second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Drew was a freshman All-American in 2022. His dad, Pete Kendall was a BC Eagle from 1991-1995 and was a first round pick of the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL.
Those running holes that were spoken about were run through by Kye Robichaux who ran for 780 yards and eight rushing touchdowns in his first season. His average of 70.9 yards per game placed him seventh in the league. In the Fenway Bowl victory over SMU, Kye went for 89 yards on the ground in helping the Eagles defeat the #17 Mustangs.
His hard work has earned him a spot on the Doak Walker watch list. This award is handed out to the best running back in college football. This honor was created back in 1989, in honor of the three-time All-American and the winner of the 1948 Heisman Trophy. This award is more than just about gaining yards on a football field. This is also about work that is done both in the community and in the classroom. Robichaux came to Boston College in the spring of 2023 after spending a year at Western Kentucky where he was a walk-on to that team.
As for the team itself, they were given the day off on Monday. On Sunday, the team practiced outside and worked on 7-on-7 offense from inside the five yard line. Starting QB Thomas Castellanos did well throwing for three touchdowns during this drill. Backup QB Grayson James also got in on the act by throwing one of his own. Defensively, the Eagles unit had their moments as well. Bugg Jones came up with a touchdown-saving tackle, Ryan Turner ripped the ball loose and stopped another score, and Khari Johnson broke up another would-be score. All in all, both sides of the ball had some good moments to call their own.
