While the weather outside may not have you thinking about indoor sports, rest assured those who are involved with them are hard at work putting next season together. In the PWHL, that means signing either draft picks or free agents. On Monday, the PWHL Boston team made news with the signing of one of their draft picks they selected back in June.
Sydney Bard, who played five years of college hockey at Colgate University, signed on the dotted line for two years with the team. The terms of the contract were not disclosed. Bard was a defender during her time with the Red Raiders and put up some impressive numbers while playing in upstate New York. The 23-year-old from New Hartford, NY. scored 13 goals and had 99 assists to finish her career with 112 points in 180 games. This past season for Colgate, Bard had two goals and 26 assists for 28 total points. She also took 78 shots.
She was a third-team All-ECAC Hockey selection in 2021-22, made first-team All-ECAC Hockey selection in 2022-23, and was a two-time All-Academy selection in 2020-21-2021-22. She was named ECAC Hockey Defender of the Month three times and ECAC Hockey Defender of the Week three times. In four of the five years played at Colgate, Bard played at least 38 games. In her last two seasons with the Red Raiders, Bard played all 40 games. She was the MVP of the Battle of the Burgh Tournament last December. On December 29, Bard recorded three assists in a game against Maine. She surpassed the 100-point mark with a four-point night vs Princeton on January 20.
The fourth-round selection has also spent time playing for the National Team. She was a part of the 2019 IIHF U16 Women’s World Championship team that would win a silver medal. Bard was invited to the U.S. Women’s National Evaluation Camp in March. General Manager Danielle Marmer calls her “A mobile defender with a high IQ and good offensive involvement.” The PWHL Boston team wants to play a fast transition game and believes that Bard fits in with what they have in mind. Bard herself stated how grateful she is to be in Boston for the next two years and can’t wait to meet her new team and begin that road to another championship run.
