Even though the college baseball season is now over, that does not mean that players have nothing to do over the summer months. Instead, there are plenty of summer leagues for players to work on their game before fall ball begins. For the UMass Lowell River Hawks, their season ended on Memorial Day weekend which allows players to report to their summer teams on time. In this edition, we will look at three players who are in the Perfect Game Collegiate Summer League.
The league is based in upstate New York and the three players are in the East Division of the league. However, since the league began play, three has become two. We’ll explain. First, let’s give you an idea of how these players are doing in the league. Dylan Bedder is pitching for the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs. The RHP from New Providence, NJ has made five appearances for the Diamond Dawgs. He has a record of 1-0 with an ERA of 9.00. He has thrown five innings, giving up seven hits, and six runs allowed, five of them earned. Dylan has walked five and struck out seven. He has given up runs in three of his five outings out of the bullpen. When Dylan returns to UMass Lowell, he will be a sixth-year senior. Mohawk Valley has an 11-9-1 record as July begins.
Anthony Marcano saw time late in the college season as a right-handed pinch hitter and at 3rd base. He is playing for the Saugerties Stallions. He has appeared in 13 games with a .256 average (11-for-43), with one home run and 10 RBI. He has stolen a couple of bases and has scored 12 runs. He has two multi-hit games to his credit. Anthony, who hails from Boston MA. will be a senior in the fall.
Now we will explain why three became two. SS Fritz Genther began his summer playing for the Stallions. In 11 games he was hitting .378 (14-for-37) with three RBI and 10 runs scored. He also had seven stolen bases to his name. Fritz had six two-hit games. Back on June 4, Genther also had a three-stolen-base game. Everything changed for Fritz on June 22 when he agreed to a Pro contract with the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League. He has appeared in four games, hitting .333 (5-for-15) with a home run which came in his first at-bat, and one RBI. He has one two-hit game which was on June 26. Genther has struck out six times in those 15 at-bats. High Point has a 36-23 record as the month of July begins.
The signing of Genther could be a big thing for the River Hawks going forward. If nothing else, it might bring some much-needed attention to the program. It could also help them with recruiting, which would be a big boost. Next time, we will check out those who are playing in both the Futures and NECBL summer leagues.
