Success in the world of college basketball is never a sure thing. While it is a good thing to have a successful season, it does not guarantee you will be able to keep your roster intact. Case in point, the Boston College Men’s basketball team. The Eagles had a fine season by all accounts. They gave themselves a postseason opportunity this season when they were invited to play in the National Invitational Tournament. But since that run, the roster has had its share of change.
Let’s start with those that have left the program. All told, six players have left the team entering the transfer portal as soon as they returned home from their second-round loss to UNLV in the NIT. Jaeden Zackery, a starting guard who had 22 double-figure point games for the Eagles, is heading to Clemson. Mason Madsen, a 6-4 guard who had 12 double figures games, is heading to Utah. Claudell Harris is heading to Mississippi State. Amani Mighly, a 6-10 forward who got limited minutes last season, is on the move heading to the University of Buffalo. Prince Algbe, a 6-7 swingman who had five double-figure games and one double-double, is on his way to Seton Hall of the Big East. Devin McGlockton, a 6-7 forward, had two double-doubles and had 19 double-figure games on his way to the SEC and Vanderbilt. A lot of production and minutes have been lost going forward for head coach Earl Grant not to mention the graduation of Quinton Post, who could hear his name called when the NBA holds their draft in June.
So who is heading to BC? First, there is Dion Brown who played guard at UMBC of the America East Conference. Brown is 6-3, averaging 19 points and 7.6 rebounds last year. He shot 51% from the field and 35% from three-point range. Brown also drew interest from Butler University from the Big East. During his sophomore season with UMBC, Brown recorded six double-doubles. Brown is one of three players that is heading to BC from the portal. The other two are Chad Venning, who played for St. Bonaventure of the A-10 last season. Venning will play a graduate year for the Eagles. A season ago, he averaged 13.4 points and 4.6 boards a game, shot 32% from the floor, and blocked 1.6 shots a game.
The Eagles were able to find a guard from their own conference to come aboard. Josh Beadle, who a season ago was at Clemson, is heading to BC. The 6-3 guard will have two years left. He averaged 11 minutes a game and scored three points. He appeared in 32 of the 39 games played by the Tigers, including both of their games in the NCAA Tournament. Josh is a 47% shooter from the floor but not a three-point shooter, only connecting on 14% of his attempts.
Guard play was something that Grant had to address this offseason. The additions plus incoming freshman Luke Toews and Nick Petronia will hopefully fill the holes left by the departed players who were mostly backcourt players. Boston College still has two spots left to fill. This means Coach Grant is not done with the portal just yet.
