Under a clear, dark sky, the USF Bulls and Syracuse Orange were ready for the Roofclaim.com Boca Raton Bowl. The crowd was good, and both teams were represented. From my vantage point, it looked like more fans were wearing green and gold. As the USF Bulls came out the crowd cheered. The weather was beautiful as the game time temperature was in the high 60s. The Syracuse Orange were in all-orange uniforms and the USF Bulls were in their all green uniforms and gold helmets. This was the first time the Bulls were in a bowl game since 2018. USF won the toss and chose to receive the ball. FAU Stadium was a great place to host the bowl game. The Orange were the home team and both teams were excited at kickoff.
On their second drive, the USF Bulls drove down the field on the legs of Bryum Brown. He threw a touchdown pass to Sean Atkins and USF took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The Bulls had a fumble and the Orange returned the ball but a blindside block resulted in a no touchdown. Syracuse made a mess on a field goal attempt and they turned it over. USF returned it for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. It did not take long for USF to strike again with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Khafre Brown to give them a 21-0 lead. Nothing was going right for Syracuse and as they were driving down the field, they threw an interception. The Bulls added a field goal and then a strip sack to take a 31-0 lead into the half.
The first half was dominated on all three sides of the ball by the USF Bulls. During the first half, Bryum Brown became the second player in program history to have 4,000 total yards in a season. Sean Atkins also set a single-season receiving record with 1,000 yards in a season. The Bulls struck quickly in the second half with a 35-yard touchdown pass caught by Sean Atkins to take a 38-0 lead. The issues for the Orange continued as on their second drive of the second half, they failed to convert on a fourth and two. At the end of the third quarter, the entire USF team was on the field celebrating a big lead. After the celebration, the Bulls scored another touchdown to put the game on ice taking a 45-0 lead. That would be the final. A shutout win for the USF Bulls.
The Roofclaims.com Boca Raton Bowl was dominated by the USF Bulls. The Syracuse Orange had everything go wrong for them. They had turnovers, sacks, and fumbles. If they crossed midfield it would go bad. Most of their fans left in the middle of the third quarter. The Bulls, on the other hand, looked relaxed, and even though they made mistakes it did not hurt them. The Orange were down to their third-string quarterback in the game. This game capped off a great first season for head coach Alex Golesh. A winning season for the first time for the Bulls since 2017.
This was my first time covering a bowl game with the USF Bulls in it. The icing on the cake was watching them dominate the Syracuse Orange and win their first bowl game since 2017.
