We are in the middle of the college football bowl season. Many are upset with the four teams that were selected for the right to play for the national championship. We all know that it takes six wins for a team to become bowl-eligible. The Avocados Mexico Cure Bowl will take place on December 16th. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 P.M. EST. The bowl has raised 4.1 million dollars for cancer research. The two teams that will face off in the game will be the Miami of Ohio RedHawks and Appalachian State Mountaineers. The stadium where the game will take place is the FBC Mortgage Stadium home of the UCF Golden Knights. The stadium is also known as the “Bounce House.” Hopefully, the game will still happen the weather could postpone or cancel the bowl game.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers finished third in the Sun Belt. In their final regular season game, they lost to the conference champion the Troy Trojans. The same Trojans that played in this game last year and defeated the UTSA Roadrunners. The Mountaineers depend on the passing game. They will throw in the running game. But they depend on the arm of quarterback Joey Aguilar. In the last game, he did not throw a passing touchdown. Appalachian State had three rushing touchdowns. This is what they must do when the passing game is not working. As far as the defense goes, they need to control the RedHawks running game. The pass defense will also be tested because they gave up 463 yards to the Trojans. They have five losses and hopefully do not suffer a sixth in the Cure Bowl.
The Miami of Ohio Red Hawks come into this game as MAC Champions. They defeated the Toledo Rockets 23-14. It was a revenge win as the Rockets beat the Red Hawks during the regular season. The other loss came against the Miami Hurricanes. The Miami of Ohio offense is based on the ground game. This will favor them because the Mountaineers give up a lot of rushing yards. On defense, they have a good run defense holding Toledo to 97 rushing yards. Where they will have to get better is on pass defense. If they can do that they could win. This is a hot team winning their last five games. The Red Hawks have averaged about 23 points per game during their winning streak. They have not given up more than 15 also during this stretch.
The game weather is supposed to be in the 70’s. They are calling for heavy rain. This means the team that runs the ball will win. That edge goes to Miami Ohio. If there is no lightning the game will happen. Hopefully, the forecast gets better. Either way, this should be a good game. Last year’s game was a back-and-forth game. Look for this year to be the same. The team that has the better record and mojo is Miami Ohio. If they play the game, they do they will win the Cure Bowl. But if Appalachian State can control the ground game on defense they can come out with a win. The turnover battle as it is in every game will be important and the one that wins that battle will win the 2023 Cure Bowl.
