Rodgers and Reese Teaching Master Class in Self-Centeredness

When people act selfishly and above others, don’t seem to appreciate their situations, and get defiant, they tend to turn people off.

Arrogance doesn’t go over well and it never should. We’re not put on this Earth to tell people we’re better than others, to make them feel inferior.

I’m thinking about this in the context of two people who can’t seem to stop being haughty, living on a higher plane, and annoying. I’m thinking of, first, Aaron Rodgers. I wish he would go away and I never had to hear him say anything ever again because when he opens his mouth it’s usually something about him coming back this season to play for the Jets, which will be to stroke his ego and has nothing to do with his teammates.

Or he’s talking about his coach being stupid compared with him, or how he’s got some special way of returning from a torn Achilles faster than everyone else because he has access to some sort of magic potion. He’s so smart he’s figured out modern medicine tricks all the stupid doctors couldn’t.

The last thing this guy makes you feel is that he cares about you as much as he does himself.

The same sort of person is now annoying people in the women’s college basketball world. Her name is Angel Reese and she missed her third straight game for her LSU team for some unexplained reason. Her coach won’t say why.

But here’s a clue: She posted a TikTok video in the past day walking around in a pink robe communicating words from charismatic and controversial Colorado football coach Deion Sanders: “Look at me. What about me would make you think that I care about your opinion of me?”

I’m looking at you, Angel, and there’s nothing about you that makes me think you care what my opinion is of you. I’m wholly confident you don’t care who I am or what I do or if I live or die. I am, however, certain you care about yourself a whole lot. You want people to notice you, to be allured by you, to respect what you do on the basketball court, and to know that you’re making millions of dollars in name, image, and likeness money. You’re rich and the rest of us are not, so you’re better, worth more, a higher quality human being. You want us to know that.

But I have a question for you, Angel: What about you makes you think people are impressed with a star college basketball player who isn’t playing in the games, making “in your face” videos reminding everyone you don’t care what they think of you? Do you think this behavior impresses us? A person with a gift for basketball not playing? How is that something any of us would make us think more highly of you?

I don’t know what you’re thinking, Angel, but it doesn’t seem to be you’re thinking about many other people besides yourself.

Oh and by the way quoting Coach Prime right now is not really enhancing your personal brand because, in case you hadn’t noticed, the team he’s coaching is losing a load of football games. You’re such a clever personal brand builder I’m surprised you aligned with a losing coach.

I think that you and Aaron Rodgers are really impressive to yourselves. There’s no questioning that. But how much are you impressing others?

Do we all think the two of you are behaving like we would tell our children they should behave? Are you demonstrating what it means to be good to other people, to lift others up, to be caring?

I’m one thousand percent sure both of you are really into yourselves. You’re immensely impressed with your talents and accomplishments.

Must feel great to be you two. Towering above us all, rich and famous.

So likable, to be revered always.

And without any doubt, you both will continue to stand above us all, looking down on us little people, wishing we could be like you but knowing we could never be that incredibly superior.
