My dream job is to be a play-by-play announcer. I have been a podcaster for just about five years now. When I started doing podcasts I was on other shows before I branched off on my own. I now have my own show called The Walker Report. The show started with me being by myself now I have three great co-hosts. With our podcasting, I have been a writer/blogger for about six years. In those six years, I have gotten press credentials for many events but the ones I am proudest of are for USF football. See I never played football in my life but it’s my favorite sport to watch and stay up on. Last year I was invited by another fellow USF writer to help him call a high school football game. I took that chance and was extremely nervous.
See, when I podcast it’s just me in front of a computer screen with few people watching live. So, when it comes to play-by-play calling many fans are watching. Those fans are there for support, but they can also be there to criticize. I am getting better at taking criticism on things. In my writing, I have received two death threats from people who disagree with what I wrote. I accept my friend’s request and helped him. The game took place at Northeast High School. The school is in St. Petersburg, Florida. That night their opponent the Vikings were hosting the Pinellas Park High School Patriots. The game had a weather delay with the rain. The game was back in and forth until the end. It was fun he taught me how to make sure I called out kids’ names and what to do with dead air.
I graduated from Gibbs High School also in St. Petersburg, Florida. A friend of mine let me know that the Gladiators were looking for a basketball announcer. I contacted the school and never heard back from them. I heard from one of the coaches of Pinellas Park High School that they were looking for a football announcer. So, I went and met the coaches and got to know what they expected of me. Just this past Friday was their 2023 spring game. I will admit I was nervous but I agreed to do it. The announcers I have looked up to are the likes of Mick Hubert and Gene Deckerhoff. My co-host said that I cannot be like them I need to be Bradley Walker. I was nervous when the game started. As the game went on, I got more and more into it.
My experience was great for me, and I loved doing it. The coaches and fans said they like hearing me announce their high school and players’ names. I know that I have some improvements and with the season starting in August or September I have time to do better. I am looking forward to being the Pinellas Park High School Patriots football announcer and maybe more for the school. This is how most announcers get their start and I am ready to be called a play-by-play announcer. This is what I love to do announcing, podcasting, and writing.
