BRIGHTON, Mass. – No. 11 Boston College baseball dropped a home series to Duke with a 6-2 loss at the Harrington Athletics Village on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles fell to 25-11 overall and 9-9 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils improved to 23-12 and 9-8.
Duke led wire-to-wire, scoring off a leadoff double in the first by shortstop Alex Mooney that was followed by a pair of productive outs to bring him in. The Blue Devils built a 3-0 lead before BC got on the board in the sixth. Junior left fielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) brought the Eagles within a run in the seventh with a leadoff home run.
A one-run Duke lead was stretched to four in the top of the ninth when third baseman Andrew Fischer hit a towering, three-run home run in a left-on-left match-up.
In a spot start, right-hander Ryan Higgins (3-0) allowed just one baserunner on a leadoff single in the third as he turned in five shutout innings with three strikeouts on just 58 pitches. Junior RHP John West (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the loss for BC in four innings of work. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
