Golf: My Look At The 2023 Masters

The golf season is off and running. We are a week out from the first major of the year. That is The Masters. It takes place at Augusta National. The course is in Augusta, Georgia. The golf course was originally built by one of the greatest golfers Bobby Jones. At this point, the defending champion Scottie Scheffler will have his champion’s dinner. That is all the past champs come back for dinner and Scheffler picks what is on the menu. All the champions get to do that. Many say that this is one of the most beautiful golf courses on the planet. It is number one on my bucket list of courses I want to play. Most fans are hoping to see Tiger Woods play a course that he knows very well. One of the best sports moments was seeing him win in 2019.

There is a PGA event going on this week which is the Valero Texas Open. The tournament that stands out is the World Golf Championships last week in Austin, Texas. That was won by Sam Burns who before this year was back-to-back champion at the Valspar Championship. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy both played in the second match. Both players should be near the top when it comes to The Masters. McIlroy is one major away from completing the grand slam of golf and that one major is The Masters. He has had his chances and in one instance, he had the lead in the final round. He had a blow-up and he has never recovered. There will be 89 players on the field. The tournament will conclude on Easter Sunday. One of the questions is how many will be watching.

Just like most golf tournaments, there is always drama at The Masters. The PGA tour rival LIV golf will have 13 players in the field. Out of those 13 players, five of them have won a green jacket. Those would be Phil Mickelson who has won it three times, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson who has won it twice, Patrick Reed, and Dustin Johnson. The PGA tour does not want to see any LIV players win the jacket. The two tours are in the middle of another lawsuit. We all know that there is nothing the PGA can do if a LIV player does win The Masters. It has been stated by the media that they will show the LIV tour players on tv and not hide them from the viewers. It will be interesting to see how they are treated by the Augusta patrons.

As we look at the odds for who everyone thinks is going to win The Masters, the number one player in the world at the top of the list would be Scottie Scheffler, the defending champ. The other two with good odds of winning their first Masters are Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. The players that we need to watch are Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele just to name a few. The highest odds for a LIV player are Dustin Johnson. It should be an exciting week of golf. Maybe we will see a guy that has long odds of winning and walk off with his first major or multiple major championships. It will great to hear the CBS Masters theme song and Jim Nantz’s final broadcasting appearance before he retires.
