NFL Draft 2023: Anthony Richardson Leads Class

The 2023 quarterback class has a few big names to pay attention to. Although many claims that Ohio State produced the best quarterback by far in addition to the best receiver, we have to go with a Lee Corso quote “Not so fast, my friend.” The best quarterback in the 2023 draft class comes out of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This isn’t SEC bias showing up yet again. The game film and combine results speak for themselves.

Anthony Richardson -Quarterback- Florida

Many expect to see the former Buckeye top the list but the former Gator Richardson is the most athletic overall in this draft class. If a general manager wants total athleticism at quarterback, selecting Richardson is an easy decision. Not only does Richardson throw with excellent velocity and accuracy, but he also displays a “Lamar Jackson like ability” to take off and go if his receivers have little to no space to make a catch. Although many would like to see him improve on his accuracy and ability to read defenses, Richardson provides a lot of tools that will confuse defenses right away. He has the speed to get downfield and turn on the jets to gain 50-plus yards by himself. Not only does he have speed but he jukes like Giants running back Saquon Barkley. A quarterback that compares to Jackson and Barkley sounds like a dream scenario, right? However, great improvisation skills come with a lot of risks. Such quarterbacks are often vulnerable to a big hit that end a season or a career fast. Richardson will have to be extremely careful because the NFL defenses tend to recognize when a quarterback is about to take off. The ability to scramble and take off won’t work as often in the NFL so Richardson needs to limit the runs and develop more of a pocket presence to be effective at the next level.

CJ Stroud -Quarterback-Ohio State

Stroud makes the list as a very close number-two quarterback. He was widely considered the top overall quarterback before the sudden rise of Richardson. Stroud needs to improve his footwork but his accuracy was on full display the last two seasons. He needs to set his feet properly on each throw but that’s something coaches can work with him on. Stroud has had amazing receivers during his career at Ohio State such as Chris Place, Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Marvin Harrison Junior, and others. He won’t necessarily have such an advantage if he goes early in the draft. It will be interesting to see if Stroud can adapt to life in the NFL. His ability to get outside the pocket and throw on the run when necessary will help him. However, he has to be careful since he will be vulnerable to big hits. Former Ohio State quarterbacks struggled in the past. Is this a case of overhyping the former quarterback or is he for real?

Will Levis -Quarterback- Kentucky

Levis has a lot of promise to deliver big-time passes right away. His cannon arm is second to none. Of all the quarterbacks in the class, he has the potential to be the top pocket passer by a huge margin. Although he can take off and go like Richardson and Stroud, he shows a lot of patience. His footwork is superior to Richardson and Stroud. The only thing that’s really questionable is that he takes chances throwing into tight coverage. He has the arm to get away with it sometimes but as other NFL starters proved, you can’t just be a rookie and be comfortable with taking gambles right away. He will need to develop more awareness to read NFL defenses or he will struggle right away.
