The Hobey Baker Award is college hockey’s biggest individual prize. 82 nominees were selected to take part in the first phase of this process. Fan voting, along with votes from every division one head hockey coach, will trim the number from 82 to 10 by March 15. The voting itself comes to an end on March 5. The Merrimack College Warriors hockey team has two of their players on the first cut. Senior forward Ben Brar and junior forward Alex Jeffries are a part of the first group of names. Both have had very good seasons that have given them a chance to be on this first set of names.
Ben Brar, from Abbotsford, British Columbia, has appeared in 27 games scoring 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points. He has two game-winning goals to his credit along with one on the power play. He has one multi-goal game to his credit which came on January 27 vs Vermont. That snapped a streak of seven straight games without a goal. Brar is second on the team in scoring and is tied for second on the team in shots on goal with 69. His +14 leads the team. Brar has been a steady guy on the ice for a team that got off to a hot start only to see that fade somewhat since the holiday break.
Alex Jefferies, from Lunenburg, leads Merrimack in both scoring and in shots. He has 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 27 games. He has also registered 109 shots in those games. Alex has two power-play goals as well as two shorthanded goals. Three of them have been game-winners. He has a +5 in those 27 games. He was named Player of the Month for December in Hockey East. In five games played, Jefferies had a goal and seven assists for eight points. It was the first time he was named player of the month in the league. Alex was also named co-player of the week on December 6th. In a two-game series vs Connecticut, he would have two goals and three assists in the series. One of those goals came on the power play.
