The Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated the Ole Miss Rebels 42-25 in the sixteenth annual Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium. This was the seventh meeting between Tech and Ole Miss. The Rebels lead the all-time series 4-2. Tech, from the Big 12, finished their regular season 7-5. Ole Miss, from the SEC, finished the regular season 8-4.
Tech got all the help they needed from Ole Miss as the Rebels turned the ball over three times early to help the Raiders build a 26-7 halftime lead. Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart had a bad first half with two of his three picks and a lost fumble.
Tech scored first at the 6:43 mark of the first quarter on a two-yard run by QB Tyler Shough. The point after attempt was good. Tech led 7-0. Ole Miss responded at the 5:26 mark with an 8 yd run for a TD by RB Zach Evans. PAT was good. The score was tied 7-7.
At the 3:23 mark of the quarter Kicker, Trey Wolf completed a 42-yard field goal to give Texas Tech the lead, 10-7 to close out the 1st quarter.
At the 6:59 mark of the 2nd quarter Tech QB, Tyler Shough scores again on a 2yd run. That gave Tech a lead of 17-7. Later in the quarter, Kicker Trey Wolf made a 32-yard field goal with 3:23 left to give Tech a 20-7 lead. Texas Tech scored once again with 28 seconds left in the quarter when QB Tyler Shough completed a 12-yard TD pass to WR Jerand Bradley. The 2-point conversion attempt failed and at the end of the half, Texas Tech led 26-7.
The Rebels wanted to come out in the third quarter and make a statement. At the 9:08 mark of the 3rd quarter, they scored on an 11-yard TD pass from QB Jaxon Dart to WR Jordan Watkins. The PAT failed to make the score 26-13. Ole Miss trailed by 13 points. Both defenses flexed their muscles the remainder of the quarter with neither team scoring ending the 3rd quarter with Texas up Tech 26-13.
Tech opened the 4th quarter scoring at the 13:20 mark on a 1 yd run by RB SaRodorick Thompson. 2 point conversion failed. Texas Tech leads 32-13. At the 9:36 mark, Texas Tech kicker Trey Wolf made a 26-yard field goal to increase the score to 35-13. At the 7:35 mark, Ole Miss responded with a 9 yd TD run by QB Jaxson Dart but the 2-point conversion failed. Texas Tech had a lead of 35-19.
At the 3:10 mark of the 4th quarter, Ole Miss scored again on a 19 yd pass from QB Jaxson Dart to WR Malik Heath. The 2-point conversion failed. Texas Tech’s lead was 10 points, 35-25. With 3:03 left in the game, Ole Miss attempted an onside kick that was scooped up by Texas Tech WR Loic Fouonji and returned 44 yds for a touchdown that put the game away for the Red Raiders.
With the loss, the Rebels end the year on a four-game losing streak and losers of five of their last six games.
The final score in this was Texas Tech 42- Ole Miss 25.
