Pittsburgh Steelers (5-7) vs Baltimore Ravens (8-4)

NFL Week 14

Game-time: Sunday, December 11th, 1:00 PM

  • Vegas line: Pittsburgh -2.5

Venue: Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA.

  • Field: Kentucky Blue Grass

Keys to Victory

Offense

  • Touchdowns over Field Goals: The offense has looked slightly better as of late, especially in the rushing attack, but settling for field goals over touchdowns will eventually catch up to this team desperate to win out to have a shot at the playoffs.
  • Splash Plays: Long, time consuming drives are nice, however, the more plays run, the more chance for errors such as penalties or turnovers. This offense has to figure out ways to get the ball downfield, especially to players like George Pickens.
  • Protect Pickett: The Ravens boast a great pass rush, so the line will have to be up to the task of keeping their quarterback protected.

Defense

  • Stack the box: With Lamar Jackson out, the best plan of action with Tyler Huntley under center is to put seven to eight players in the box, focusing on stopping the run game, and forcing Huntley to beat the Steelers via the pass. Expect the Ravens to utilize a trio of backs in Gus Edwards, Kenyon Drake, and J.K. Dobbins.
  • Limit damage by Mark Andrews: If you stop Andrews, you basically stop the Ravens offense cold.

The Game Scoop

The roller coaster season for the Pittsburgh Steelers (5-7) continues it’s journey vs their bitter rivals in the Baltimore Ravens (8-4) this Sunday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium, at 1:00 PM.

Every time you start getting good vibes for Pittsburgh, they end up suffering a devastating loss as they did vs the Dolphins and Bengals.

Yet every time the Steelers have been left for dead, they go out and beat a Tampa Bay, or win their last two games to crack the door open to the final Wild Card spot in the AFC Playoffs.

With the New York Jets hanging on to that final spot at 7-5, the Steelers will likely have to go 4-1, if not run the table to make the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.

The path to that accomplishment got a little easier with the news of Raven’s QB Lamar Jackson’s injury that could sideline him for one to three weeks.

After Baltimore, whom Pittsburgh is favored over by 2.5 points, the Steelers face subpar teams in Carolina and Oakland, two squads that the Steelers should also be favored in, especially if they defeat Baltimore this weekend.

That would put the formerly 3-7 Steelers at 8-7 with the final two contests at Baltimore and at home vs the Browns.

First things first, and that is taking care of business vs the Ravens at what should be a fired up home crowd.

Pittsburgh’s defense will need to step up to the challenge, and keep Baltimore’s rushing attack at bay, and limit star tight end Mark Andrews as much as they can.

With Tyler Huntley at quarterback, the Ravens will surely focus on pounding the ball and controlling the clock as much as possible.

It would behoove the Steelers to stack the box and dare Baltimore to throw the ball, and when they do pass, create pressure on Huntley and force a few turnovers for the offense to capitalize upon.

Speaking of the offense, which has shown signs of life over the past few weeks, Kenny Pickett and his play-makers will have to find ways to finish drives in the endzone and not settle for field goals. Najee Harris has been playing outstanding of late, and if he continues down that path, the rushing attack should open up some chances for Pickett to hit some splash plays downfield to Diontae Johnson and George Pickens.

To be be quite blunt, this offense under offensive coordinator Matt Canada has failed to put it’s players in position to succeed, which is why this team is 5-7 instead of 7-5 or better.

“I think it’s showing that you have to continue to push and push and keep doing what you believe is right,” said Canada. “I think our guys have done that. We’re nowhere near being done. We got five games left. We’ve got a huge one this week. We’re not a finished product in any way, shape or form. But I do think you’re starting to see our players more importantly, which is really all that matters, are starting to see why we’re doing it, how this fits, what their roles are.

“There’s not a real magic formula to it. Sometimes you wish there was. I’m not going to say me, but I think we as a staff have stayed the course. We know why we’re doing what we’re doing. We know why we’re running the plays we’re running. We know who we’re trying to get the ball to. It doesn’t always show up and nobody outside of the building maybe understands why, but you just have to keep doing what I believe is right.”

Now it’s up to Pickett to work with Canada’s offense and find ways to get the ball in the hands of his receivers and let them make plays.

“Everyone wants the ball. Everyone wants to win,” Pickett said. “You never know who is going to have that big game. Sometimes, it may not be you one week, and maybe it’s another guy and it bounces around like that. It’s kind of how it is depending on what the defense is and how they are dictating me going with the football. We’ll continue to push forward and get our playmakers the football.”

It’s not quite the old days of Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Troy Polamalu, and James Harrison going up against Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Terrell Suggs, but it’s still a bitter rivalry, one that the Steelers have managed to win four straight games in.

On Sunday, chalk up five straight, as the Pittsburgh defense will rise to the occasion and stifle the Baltimore offense, while Kenny Pickett and the offense will muster enough points to take down the hated Ravens once-more.

Prediction: Steelers 20 Ravens 16
