How to Bet on the FIFA World Cup

We usually concentrate on football, baseball, and basketball but you may have noticed that there is another big sports event just starting at the moment. The FIFA World Cup is soccer’s most prestigious international tournament and is currently underway in Qatar in the Middle East.

You may not know too much about the World Cup – or even soccer in general. But you should get used to the evening sports shows including highlights reels of the games every day until just before the holidays. But, as many of us in the US can now gamble legally, we thought it would be the perfect time for a quick guide to how to bet on the World Cup online.

The Format

We are not going to get into how to register with a sportsbook. But we are going to give you the basics of the World Cup so you can see which players and teams to back.

Thirty-two nations will be represented at the World Cup, where they will be split into eight groups of four. Every team will play the other three teams in the group once, earning three points for a win and one point for a draw. A loss gets zero points. The top two teams in the group with the most points will go through to the next stage.

This is where the tournament turns into a knockout. The 16 countries left are drawn to play one other team with a winner takes all outcome. That carries on for the last eight – or quarterfinals – then the semifinals, and eventually the World Cup final.

The Favorites

The USMNT plays Wales, England, and Iran in its group but is not considered one of the favorites to go all the way and win the World Cup. England is considered by some to have a chance of lifting the trophy for only the second time in its history. But there are others that should be considered ahead of the Three Lions.

Two South American giants of soccer are the biggest names to keep an eye on when it comes to a World Cup winner. Brazil has a team full of highly talented players that have been building up to this tournament after a disappointing edition in its own country in 2014 and further woe in 2018.

Argentina is also heavily fancied to win the cup. That is largely down to its captain and talisman, Lionel Messi. He is considered the best soccer player on the planet by many and will be playing in his last-ever World Cup in Qatar. Maybe he is destined to finally win this competition?

The Underdogs

With soccer World cups it is not so much the underdogs, as dark horses. Denmark has some history of upsetting the odds, after winning the 1992 European Championship after only being entered thanks to the fall of Yugoslavia. The Danes did well to make it all the way to the semifinal of the most recent Euros as well and could cause a few surprises in Qatar if it gets off to a good start.

Another team to look out for is the Netherlands. The Dutch have a long history in the World Cup but have never won it, losing the final on three separate occasions. This is a team that missed out completely on the last World Cup after failing to qualify. But there is a renewed spirit in the current squad of players and there is a feeling that the Netherlands could go far in this tournament.

What to Bet On?

The simple answer to this question is, just about everything as long as your sportsbook is offering a market. But the main betting options are the outright winner and top goalscorer. Every game has its own individual markets and if you know a little about the sport, there could be some good opportunities to look at those.

As far as a betting pick, we like Argentina to provide Lionel Messi with the perfect send-off in what will surely be his final game for his country.
