Week four of the college football season is upon us. In the Atlantic Coast Conference, that means league action is starting to take over. As we look forward to what is in store, it should be pointed out that the ACC still has seven teams without a loss. Five of those teams are in the Atlantic Division. All four teams from the state of North Carolina are unbeaten through three weeks for the first time ever. While both Florida State and Syracuse find themselves perfect for the first time in quite some time. For the Seminoles, it is the first time since 2015. For the Orange, it’s the first time since 2018 when they would go on to win 10 games that season. Let’s take a look at week four in the ACC.

As mentioned, three conference games are on tap for the weekend. The best of the three will take place at noon on Saturday when #5 Clemson takes on # 16 Wake Forest. Both the Tigers (3-0, 1-0) and the Demon Deacons (3-0, 0-0) have yet to lose this month. Clemson has the nation’s longest winning streak at nine games. Wake has won their last 11 home games so something will have to give on Saturday. Clemson holds a decided advantage in this series with a league record of 59-9-1 vs Wake Forest. Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has yet to lose to the Demon Deacons (13-0). The last time Wake was a winner was back in 2008 by a 12-7 score. Wake Forest came off a bit of a scare vs Liberty last Saturday. However, QB Sam Hartman did break the all-time passing mark in the third quarter. Hartman has now thrown for 9,891 yards, which moves him into the Top-10 in the league. This will be the third time overall and the first time in the ACC that both teams will be ranked heading into this game. Clemson will have last week’s Running Back of the Week, Will Shipley, and Offensive Lineman of the Week Will Putman ready to roll.

On Friday night Virginia (2-1, 0-0) takes on Syracuse (3-0, 1-0). This is the first meeting between these two since 2015. The Orange, behind league QB of the Week Garett Shrader, will be looking to go 2-0 in league play for the first time ever. Virginia, like Wake Forest, had quite a game on their hands vs Old Dominion last Saturday. The 16-14 win for the Cavaliers was not without its shaky moments. QB Brennan Armstrong broke the program’s passing record in the fourth quarter of that contest. He passed Matt Schaub on the all-time list. Armstrong now stands with 7,504 for his career. The Orange are number two in the league in turnover margin.

Boston College (1-2, 0-0) heads to Florida on Saturday to meet the Seminoles (3-0, 1-0). This has been a difficult matchup for the Eagles over the years. Florida State has won 10 of the last 11 games between the two. The last time BC claimed a win was in 2017 by a 35-3 count. Florida State is 12-4 vs BC in ACC play. At home, the Seminoles are 6-2. Eagles quarterback Phil Jurkovec threw for 320 yards in the win over Maine. He now has over 4,000 passing yards making him the tenth Eagles QB to reach that mark. He is the fastest to do so, as it took him only 19 games.

Another game of note is Notre Dame (1-2) playing on the road at North Carolina (3-0). If the Tar Heels can win on Saturday afternoon they will improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1997. This is the 23rd all-time meeting and the third straight year the two teams have met. Tar Heels freshman QB Drake Maye leads the country with 11 passing touchdowns. The Irish pass defense will be tested for sure. UNC wide receiver Josh Downs leads the league in receptions per game at 7.8, and in receiving yards at 102.7.

The rest of the slate of games has West Virginia at Virginia Tech, Rhode Island at #24 Pittsburgh, Duke at Kansas, Middle Tennessee at #25 Miami, Georgia Tech at UCF, and UConn at #11 North Carolina State. The league now stands at 28-6 in non-conference games, including 17-6 vs FBS schools. The 28-6 is the best through three weeks since 2014 and is second among all conferences this season.

That takes care of this week. We will be back next week with more from the ACC.
