Golf: A Recap Of Charity Match 6

This was the first match that we did not have a professional golfer playing. In my opinion, it was good to see amateur players. It just was cool that it was to see four great quarterbacks in the NFL. We saw the young guns in Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen against the veterans in Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. What I saw before the match was the trash-talking between the two teams. One where Tom Brady handed a ball with the Lombardi trophy on it as a gag to Josh Allen. We know Brady has seven and so far, Allen has none. Allen jabbed back with a ball with Brady’s picture from the NFL combine. The commentary was great with NBA analyst Charles Barkley where he was jabbing all four players. Barkley may have the worse golf swing on planet earth.

It was cool to see the players interact with the commenters. I also saw the difference between the four players’ golf swings. Some complain that Patrick Mahomes took too many practice swings and left divots. In my opinion, some people take many practice swings, and that has never bothered me. I have been playing the game for 32 years. To me, if he makes a divot they get filled in. The golf course was beautiful and the only one on the Las Vegas Strip. The match began at 6:30 PM EST and 3:30 PST. In my previous article about this golf match, I wondered why they were only playing 12 holes. The reason was a time restraint. As they got to the 12th hole it was 7:30 PM PST so it would have been dark for them beyond that hole.

The match began with Aaron Rodgers making a birdie on the first hole putting himself and Brady up early in the match. In fact, after two holes, they were 2up. What that means is they won the first two holes. This matchplay means the lowest score wins the hole. This is the same format that drives me to a heart attack every two years the Ryder Cup. Even though they were down early Mahomes started drinking what analyst JJ Watt called swing juice which was beer. He and Allen won the third hole and got within one. They would tie it up and no team would ever go more than one-up the rest of the way. It came down all tied on the par 3, 12th hole. Brady and Mahomes both had a mulligan coming to the final hole. Brady hit first followed by Rodgers, Allen, and Mahomes.

Brady hit his shot just over the green into the rough. Rodgers got up and showed why he was the best golfer of the four hittings his shot to within 15 feet of the hole. Allen hit him just to the side of the green. Mahomes hit his shot into the water on the left side of the green. He and Brady both used their mulligan which before they hit them had to hit a very large picture of Charles Barkley’s face which they both hit easily. Mahomes mulligan was 80-feet from the hole. They took his shot and Allen nearly holed it out just missing by inches. Mahomes made a bet with Barkley that if he made the putt he would have to go jump in the fountain. Brady hit Rodger’s shot first and missed the putt leaving Rodgers to sink the center of the hole to win the match.

Many thought the match was boring. I had no problem not seeing a professional golfer. It shows what amateur players like me do we all have bad shots. It shows what these guys do during the offseason and bye weeks. We could see who the best golfer was and that was Aaron Rodgers. But Brady, Mahomes, and Allen are good as well. It was a beautiful golf course. I hope to get to play when I get to Las Vegas. At the end of the day, this was for charity which is great.
