TSU baseball run-ruled Alcorn State by a 13-3 margin Saturday afternoon at MacGregor Park.
TSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Johnathon Thomas hit a two-RBI double which scored Jeremy Gaines and Gabriel Vasquez. The lead moved up to 3-0 on a well-executed suicide squeeze by Almaguer which scored Thomas.
CJ Castillo opened the third with a leadoff walk and scored on Almaguer’s RBI single. Tyrese Clayborne’s RBI triple scored Almaguer as Clayborne stole home for a 6-0 advantage. ASU would score twice in the fourth to draw within 6-2 but gave it back up in the bottom half as Justin Cooper scored on an ASU error.
TSU triggered the run rule in the sixth as Avery Chatman hit a sac fly followed by RBIs from Thomas, Almaguer, Clayborne, Tyler Williams, and Michael Goudeau. ASU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but reliever A.J. Winger overcame the jam and struck out the final batter for the baseball game.
Clayborne went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Almaguer went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Thomas also had three RBI on the day.
Jordan Martinez earned the win with five strikeouts in four innings.
