Texas Southern hit five home runs in game one as they used an offensive explosion in the fourth and fifth innings to claim a 17-4 win over Wiley.

With a large contingent of Houston area athletes on Wiley’s roster, the Tigers struck first to quiet the crowd as Justin Cooper doubled and scored on Jeremy Almaguer’s RBI double. Wiley would have a breakout inning in the second with back-to-back doubles followed by a triple for a 2-1 lead. Wiley would tack on another run for a 3-1 lead as TSU avoided further damage as the bases were loaded on the final out. Michael Goudeau hit his second homer of 2022 in the bottom frame to draw TSU within 3-2. However, Wiley would increase its lead to 4-2 in the top of the third with a solo homer to left.

TSU would silence the crowd and turn things up in the third as Justin Cooper homered to begin the inning and an error allowed Jeremy Gaines to score to knot things up at 4-all. CJ Castillo drove in a pair of runs followed by a two-run homer from Tyrese Clayborne. Cooper would cap the inning off with another RBI as TSU upped the lead to 10-4.

From that point, TSU starter Roberto Garcia settled down and pitched four scoreless innings while the offense remained red hot as Avery Chatman recorded an RBI single followed by Goudeau’s three-run homer in the fourth. Johnathan Thomas drove in the final run of the inning as TSU exploded for five runs en route to a 15-4 lead. Jordan Vidato and Justin Cooper homered in the sixth for TSU’s final two runs as the team win its fifth straight.

Garcia earned his first win of 2022 as he struck out five in five innings of action. Cooper finished 5-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored while Chatman, Clayborne, and Goudeau also had multiple hits. Goudeau also had four RBI.

TSU 19, WILEY 4

Johnathan Thomas scored the game’s first run in the first inning off a wild pitch followed by Justin Cooper. Wiley had a scoreless second and TSU went to work in second as Jeremy Gaines drew a bases-loaded walk and an error increased the lead to 4-0. Gabe Vasquez hit a grand slam to up the margin to 8-0 followed by another homer from Goudeau as TSU led 10-0.

The Tigers would score multiple times over the final five innings including a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings.
