The Alabama State Hornets finished in amazing fashion with a blowout win over the Tuskegee Golden Tigers in a blowout 43-9. This was the first time the two teams have played each other on Thanksgiving since 2012, reviving the original Turkey Day Classic.
This game was all Alabama State from the first snap. The first quarter started with the Tigers going three and out. Quarterback Joe Owens was starting the second game of his career at Alabama State. On the first drive for ASU, Owens showed he is the person to talk the Hornets to the championship level. His ability to extend plays and avoid taking sacks or dead plays. The awareness to find the running lanes once the pocket breaks down. Owens finished 20 for 27, 209 passing yards, and one touchdown. Running back Jacory Merritt had a couple of nice runs along with two touchdowns on the day. Another name that you saw was runningback Dontrey Manley. He had 10 rushes for 98 yards and one touchdown. The offense alone accounted for 28 points on the day which is the most this season but it wasn’t just the offense, special teams came up with a huge score as well. Punt returner Robert McMinn returned a punt for 37 yards to further increase the Hornets’ lead. On four returns he accumulated 75 return yards. Hunter Hanson showed his worth in his final game at Alabama State with three field goals made, the most this season.
The defense for the Hornets played extremely well too. The pass rush was too much for the Tuskegee offense as they got five sacks for a total of 42 yards lost and four QB hits. The pass defense played lockdown getting nine pass breakups and an interception by Irshaad Davis as the cherry on top. Eight tackles for loss and a forced fumble by Jalik Monroe made this a great day for the Hornets.
