Eagles Drop One at Syracuse, 75-67. Steffon Mitchell posts double-double

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Rich Kelly’s 14 points led four Eagles on double figures in a 75-67 loss at Syracuse on Saturday afternoon.

The Orange built an early double-digit lead but was never able to break away from a feisty BC squad.  Syracuse led 25-13 before a 13-4 push by BC made it 29-26 with 7:20 to go in the first half.  The Eagles would trail, 41-35 at the break.

Syracuse scored the first six points of the second half, building back up to a 12-point lead – 47-35, with 18:08 to go – but the Eagles kept in the fight.  A 6-0 push forced Syracuse to call a :30 timeout with 12:18 to go in a six-point game (53-47).

A DeMarr Langford and-one got BC within five – 62-57 – with 5:36 to play but the Eagles would get no closer.

Steffon Mitchell scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Jay Heath scored 12 and DeMarr Langford 10. CJ Felder fouled out with nine points and 12 rebounds. He has 26 rebounds in the last two games.

The Eagles put up 31 shots from behind the arc, making nine. Syracuse outscored BC 38-20 in the paint.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Steffon Mitchell recorded his third double-double of the season – and 16th of his career.  He finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
  • Rich Kelly had 14 points, making four 3-pointers on the day.  He added three assists and a blocked shot.
  • DeMarr Langford came off the bench to contribute 10 points, four boards, and a steal in 20 minutes.  It was his first game action in close to a month (last – at Notre Dame. Jan. 16).
  • Jay Heath added 12 points, two steals, and a blocked shot.  He was 6-of-7 from inside the arc.
  • CJ Felder narrowly missed a double-double, with nine points, 12 boards, a block, a steal, and an assist.
  • Makai Ashton-Langford finished with seven points, four assists, three boards, and two steals.
  • BC shot 36.5% (23-63) from the floor, including 9-of-31 from the outside.  It logged 14 assists on 23 made baskets.

STAT OF THE GAME:

  • 12 – Boston College outscored Syracuse, 12-8, in second-chance points.  The Eagles had 10 offensive rebounds.

  • Steffon Mitchell posted an efficiency rating of 24.
  • Two other Eagles – CJ Felder and Rich Kelly – reached double digits in EFF at 12 and 10, respectively.
