CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – BC football returned to the field for practice No. 11 of preseason camp Tuesday morning inside Fish Field House. The Eagles wore full pads in an efficient and intense, two-hour practice.

Head coach Jeff Hafley met with reporters following Tuesday’s practice and discussed the process sophomore quarterback Phil Jurkovec is making.

“I think what you see with Phil, every day he gets better,” said Hafley. “It’s been a long time since he’s got a lot of reps like this and he needs experience, he needs a lot of different things thrown at him. He needs to see it, he needs to make mistakes and fail and correct it. But he’s doing a really good job, we’re throwing a lot at him and he is picking it up. It’s positive, he’s having fun.”

Jurkovec was granted immediate eligibility from the NCAA in August. He transferred to Boston College in January from Notre Dame and will have three seasons of eligibility with the Eagles.

In six games for the Fighting Irish in 2019, Jurkovec was 12-of-16 passing for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 130 yards and averaged 5.9 yards per carry as Notre Dame’s backup quarterback.

Practice Notes: True freshman wide receiver Taji Johnson has been able to get a large amount of reps this preseason and the Georgia native has made the most of his opportunities. The 6’3” newcomer made the play of the day on Tuesday, snaring a one-handed touchdown reception on a dime thrown by Jurkovec. The offense poured onto the field to celebrate the big play. Johnson signed with BC football last December and enrolled last January and had five practices under his belt in the spring prior to this preseason camp … redshirt freshman tight end Spencer Witter has shown some promise this preseason as he has continued to get more looks during teamwork. The West Hartford, Conn., native redshirted last year and looks to be in the mix for playing time in 2020 for the Eagles … redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Johnson made a great throw in the red zone to sophomore wide receiver Ethon Williams to set up a touchdown … true freshman defensive tackle Cam Horsley came up with an interception off a deflected pass during team period on Tuesday … stop if you heard this before, but sophomore wide receiver Zay Flowers was on the receiving end of another long, downfield completion from Jurkovec on Tuesday … sophomore defensive end Shitta Sillah had a sack during teamwork.
