ORONO, Maine — The UMass Lowell baseball team could not avoid the sweep and fell 5-1 to Maine in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) drove in the lone River Hawk (7-23, 4-8) run in the top of the eighth inning, plating Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) on a single. The freshman was the only UMass Lowell player to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Black Bears’ (7-22, 6-5) Danny Casals scored the game’s first run and drove in a pair with a double in the third to open a 3-0 lead for the hosts.

Joshua Becker (Burlington, Mass.) made his first career start and recorded three strikeouts in three innings. Maine’s Cody Laweryson pitched seven shutout innings and struck out eight to pick up the victory.

The River Hawks are back in action, hosting Binghamton for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday. Both days will start at noon.
