Boston College Preseason Practice Report No. 11

Full pads and several scrimmage periods were the theme of the day Thursday

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After practicing in just spiders and shorts on Wednesday, the Boston College football team returned to full pads on Thursday. The two-hour practice featured several periods of scrimmages with the first, second and third units.

The defense seemed to have the upper hand for most of the scrimmage, but the offense came alive toward the end of Thursday’s practice.

The first-team defense forced a three-and-out on the first offensive series of the day. That set the tone as the defense – first, second and third units – looked to be in control early.

Notes: In a live punt series, Michael Walker posted a 20-yard return… the defense immediately got the ball back on a Brandon Sebastian interception… Anthony Brown took over at QB and moved the sticks with first and third down handoffs to David Bailey… a completion to Hunter Long moved the ball to a goal-to-go situation… from the five, Bailey burst through the line for the score … in the following series, the second team offense moved the ball from its own 35 to the defense’s 12 on just three plays as Javian Dayne accounted for all 53 yards, including a 31-yard run… two completions later from Matt McDonald to John Fadule, assisted by a big block from Joey Luchetti, and the offense was back in the end zone … the defense went into bend-but-don’t break mode in the next series. The offense drove the ball to the three but moved back on a penalty. On a fourth down attempt, the defense turned away the offense as Marcus Valdez and Brandon Barlow got into the backfield for a sack … Colton Lichtenberg was perfect on the day on PATs and a 31-yard field goal … BC used crowd noise during the entire scrimmage … Grant Carlson continues to punt well as he connected on three excellent punts Thursday … Ryan Betro had a sack with the third-team defense during a live period against the third-team offense … Vinny DePalma had a fumble recovery to stop a second-team offensive drive … Jason Maitre has flashed at cornerback for the Eagles so far during training camp … NFL scouts from the Falcons, Ravens, Texans, and Eagles have been at training camp this week … BC has one practice Friday before the second big scrimmage of training camp Saturday morning.
