Boston College Football Preseason Practice Report No. 5

First day in full pads for the Eagles

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Wednesday’s fifth practice of training camp was a welcome sight to the players as they were able to suit up in full pads for the first time in 2018. The practice prominently featured four offense vs. defense sessions in full pads. Reserve quarterbacks Matt McDonald and EJ Perry continued to split the snaps with the offense, while starter Anthony Brown guided the first-team offense during 7v7 drills as he continues on his road back from a 2017 season-ending injury.

Head Coach Steve Addazio

On BC’s quarterback depth:

“I think EJ and Matt McDonald are competing like crazy right now. They’re very talented. We’re excited about them. Anthony Brown is our starting quarterback. That’s not open for debate right now. We love the fact that we have two guys that are as talented as the guys we have that are pushing every day. Your program is healthy when you have competition within positions.”

Deputy Head Coach Offense/Offensive Coordinator Scott Loeffler

On combining Brown and AJ Dillon’s talents in the offense:

“The foundation of any football program, in my opinion, has to be able to run the ball. You also have to be able to throw it. It’s the new wave in football, that you have to be balanced. We’ve got a dynamic running back. Any time the defense has to account for the run game, it makes our throw game much better. We’re super excited about it. We feel like we have some weapons on the perimeter. Hopefully the throw and run game can really work together the way we want it to.”

Practice Notes: Freshmen Ryan Betro and Joey Luchetti look to be two true freshmen who have shown promising flashes so far in training camp … veterans Tommy Sweeney and Connor Strachan battling off the line during 7-on-7 work was a terrific battle … one of the best receptions of the day was a one-handed catch by Luchetti during 7-on-7 period … senior defensive ends Zach Allen and Wyatt Ray were all over the field Wednesday. The duo could have easily combined for five sacks on the day … senior Will Harris came free for a sack on a safety blitz … defense quick to react to offense’s up-tempo pace… Matt McDonald tossed a deep completion to tight end Ray Marten during teamwork … running back Travis Levy gaining yards in the run and pass games … back-to-back PBUs for Vinny DePalma and Paul Theobald Jr… Hamp Cheevers with a diving interception … tight ends Sweeney, Korab Idrizi and Hunter Long continue to make plays … Chris Garrison with a high catch tip-toeing the sideline … Colton Lichtenberg drilled field goals from 37 and 35 to end the final two series … a total of 10 NFL scouts from eight different organizations were on hand at Wednesday’s practice. Scouts from the Patriots, 49ers, Broncos, Browns, Chiefs, Redskins, Cardinals and the Seahawks were in attendance … BC men’s basketball head coach Jim Christian visited the Fish Field House for the first time Wednesday. Last week men’s ice hockey head coach Jerry York also stopped by to check out the Eagles during training camp … BC returns with another morning practice tomorrow and Friday before the first scrimmage of camp on Saturday.
