Doubleheader sweep leads to nine straight wins

LOWELL, MA – It was a joyful change of pace for the Spinners (18-14) who played two against the Aberdeen Ironbirds (13-19) in front of the LeLacheur Park faithful in the daytime for the first time this season.

Devlin Granberg blasted the first home run of his professional career to give the Spinners an early 1-0 lead in the first game. It was the first of two key RBI on the day for Granberg.

Lowell added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Jarren Duran hit his league-leading eighth triple to drive in Jonathan Ortega to make it 2-0. Duran, who is now one triple shy of tying the Spinners single-season record came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Granberg.

The standout performance in the first game was easily starting pitcher Eduard Bazardo. In 7.0 innings, the first complete game thrown by a Spinner this season struck out nine, allowed four hits, and one unearned run. Bazardo now sits 4-2 with a 2.08 ERA on the season.

The second game was much more dramatic for the Spinners. Taylor Ahearn got a spot start but only threw one inning, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks.

The bullpen was able to hold the Ironbirds scoreless the rest of the way after leaving 11 runners stranded throughout the ballgame.

Lowell clawed their way back from a two-run hole in the bottom of the fifth inning when Alberto Schmidt singled to lead off the inning. Korby Batesole reached on a bunt to put runners on the corners and a Jarren Duran single brought in Schmidt to cut the lead to one. After a sacrifice bunt by Grant Williams, Trey Ganns drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to right field to score Batesole.

After recording two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, Devlin Granberg kept hope alive with a single and Ganns drew a walk to put a runner on second. Tyler Esplin played the hero in this one after a single to right field was enough to drive in Granberg and deliver the Spinners their ninth straight win.
