Lowell loses fourth straight 10-5 to Hudson Valley

For the first time since the NYPL season began, we can call a Lowell Spinners, (9-14)  game an ugly loss. It’s all thanks to a seventh inning that got away from them. Up until that inning, the Spinners played some pretty good baseball.

Their starting pitching from Brian Brown was excellent, five-innings of no-hit ball. The infield defense was solid turning two double plays in the middle of the diamond and they received a bomb of a home run from Brandon Phillips. At the time, it gave the Spinners a 4-0 lead. The blast traveled an estimated 430 feet completely over the scoreboard in left.

Its too bad the game was not stopped after five innings The team and the crowd would have been happy with the result, but we play nine frames of baseball. 27 outs are necessary to get the “W”.

Hudson Valley, (15-8) was ready to play the full nine, Lowell was not. The end result was a 10-5 win for the Renegades, a game that Spinners manager Corey Wimberly was none too pleased about.

In that pivotal seventh, the Spinners entered with a 4-3 advantage. Brown had been replaced by Taylor Ahearn, who gave up a couple of runs to Hudson Valley in the sixth.  A double by the Renegades DH Eric Ostberg, was followed one out later by a single to center by leadoff hitter Michael Smith, who advanced to second on the throw home, 4-2 Spinners.

Smith scored the third run of the game, and the second of the inning on a base hit to left by Tyler Frank. 4-3 Spinners after six.

Meanwhile, Hudson Valley’s pitching settled down after Phillips’ HR. Starter Miller Hogan did not make it out of the third inning. His line of 2.1 IP, four bits, four runs, all earned was not great, but on Sunday night his mates picked him up in a big way. The combination of Joe Ryan and Jesus Ortiz shut the Spinners offense down. They would throw a combined six and two-thirds of one-run ball, allowing four hits. They deserve a pat on the back for giving their team a chance to come back.

And come back they did. In the seventh, Hudson Valley would bat around sending 13 men to the plate. Eight of them would score. There were two Spinners errors in that frame. There was a wild pitch and a home run off the bat of Tyler Frank (number two on the year part of a five-RBI night). Then, a three-run jack that was served up by the second hurler of that inning, Tanner Raiburn. The HR would also get the Spinners manager tossed from the game for arguing where the ball landed.

When it was all over, what was a one run lead for Lowell, turned into a six run deficit at 10-4 Hudson Valley.  The Spinners did tack on one more run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score Hudson Valley 10 Lowell 5.

If there was another bright spot for the Spinners to go along with Brown start, it would be leadoff man Jarren Duran. A four for five night for Lowell’s DH including three singles, and his sixth triple of the season, which leads the league. He would also score twice on Sunday night.

Lowell is in serious need of a win and will try to salvage the final game of the series and homestand, on Monday night with first pitch slated for 6:30 pm.
