Red Sox top prospect, Michael Chavis returns

It has been quite awhile since Red Sox top prospect Michael Chavis has seen a baseball field for a live game. That’s because he has been serving an 80-game suspension for PED use. He has spent time in the Sox minor league complex in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Chavis has emerged as the top minor league prospect after clubbing 31 home runs between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland last summer. He was invited to the big-league camp this spring as a non-roster invitee. Because of the suspension, he never saw any game action.

On Monday night, Chavis returned to the diamond. He played third base and hit third for the Lowell Spinners in their game vs the Connecticut Tigers in the New York Penn League. He went 0-3 with a walk and had only one fielding chance which he took care of.

After the game, he spent time with the media talking about the experience.  He said he was “glad to be back out there”. He thanked the Spinners roster for welcoming him to the team. He also said he felt comfortable being back on the field and was happy how the night went.

He talked about his suspension, of which he still maintains his innocence.  He still does not understand how a positive result could have come back.  He was asked if he needed to re-establish himself in the Red Sox organization and his answer was no. He went on to say that the entire organization has been very supportive of him during his time off.

Chavis very much believes in himself and wants to be a part of what is going on at the big-league level with the Red Sox. He does not know what the next move will be for him.  For now, he is happy to be back on the field doing what he loves most, playing baseball.

It may take him some time for him to get back into the everyday grind of the game. After all, the last live game he played in was back last fall in the Arizona Fall League. It will take a few reps to get his timing back, both in the field and at the plate. But the good news for Sox fans is the top prospect is back in the fold and ready to help any way he can.

During his time on the sidelines, Michael says he learned a lot about the do’s and don’t about supplements and is convinced what happened will not happen again. The Boston Red Sox hope so.
