Spinners take two of three from Aberdeen with 6-4 win

If the first fifteen games have taught us anything about this year’s edition of the Lowell Spinners, it is they will compete until the final out is recorded. Saturday night was a perfect example. After an ugly top of the eighth inning, in which Aberdeen scored three times without the benefit of a hit, the Spinners responded with two in the bottom of the eighth to take the ballgame and the series 6-4 from the IronBirds (7-8).

Starting pitching in the name of Hunter Haworth, was very good. After a rough outing his last time on the road, he delivered a strong six-inning performance in which he gave up only two hits and one earned run. He did walk two and strike out six. After the game, Haworth said he has been working on keeping the ball down in the zone. At one point on Saturday, he retired ten IronBirds hitters in a row.

Aberdeen’s lone run against Haworth came in the second inning. With a man on third and two outs, Luke Ringhofer singled to right-center field scoring Cody Roberts with the game’s first run, 1-0 Aberdeen.

The Spinners tied the game in the bottom of the frame against IronBirds starter Gray Fenter. With one down, Tyler Esplin walked, stole second (his second steal of the season), and scored on a double to left field by Tyler Deardon. Game tied at 1-1 after two.

Lowell added to the lead in the third when Jonathan Ortega singled to left, moved to second on a groundout, then was driven home on a Kole Cottam single to right field. Cottam was thrown out at second trying to advance.

Lowell added two more against Fenter in the fifth when Deardon walked and moved up on a wild pitch. After Andre Colon struck out, Ortega came through with a double to right-center scoring Deardon. 3-1 Lowell. Ortega crossed the plate on an RBI knock by Jarren Duran who has been swinging a hot bat for the Spinners. The two-run fifth signaled the end of the night for Fenter who went 4.2 innings, six hits and four earned runs.

Aberdeen would score three times to tie the game at 4-4 without a hit. Three walks, a hit batter, and an error on a fielder’s choice at second base were how the runs were scored. Lowell relief pitcher Francisco Lopes-Soto, who started the inning, and Tanner Railburn, who was given a blown save, were the hurlers who help to create the mess. All three walks in the inning came around to score.

Manager Corey Wimberly of the Spinners liked the makeup of his team and how they responded is exactly what he is talking about. In the bottom of the eighth against Aberdeen’s third pitcher of the night, Nick Vichio, Lowell went to work quickly. Back to back triples by Duran and Cole Brannen got the lead once again at 5-4, Cottam then delivered his second ribbie of the night on a sacrifice fly to right that plated Brannen. 6-4 Spinners.

Railburn settled down in the ninth despite allowing a double to Guiyuan Xu. He would retire the IronBirds to pick up his first win of the season. Vichio lost for the first time this year as well.

Lowell (7-8), continues the homestand with a three-game set starting on Sunday vs the Connecticut Tigers with first pitch at 5:30 PM.

Before the game, the Spinners announced that reliever Harrison Cooney was being promoted to High-A Salem. He made four appearances all out of the pen for Lowell.
