New York Penn League Baseball News & Notes

The 2018 NY Penn League season is one week old, and we here at NGSC Sports are happy to once again provide coverage of this short-season league. Here is a look at how the first seven days of league play went.

In Batavia, the Muckdogs have been getting early-season offensive support from Jerar Encarnacion, who after one week of play, ranks third in batting with a .455 average. His ten hits rank him first in the league and he is also first in At Bats with 22. He is tied for first in runs scored with six and is second in total bases with 15. Encarnacion’s three doubles place him second in that category.

Another player swinging an early season hot bat is Vermont Lake Monsters Payton Squire. Squire is sixth in the batting race hitting at a .417 clip. He is tied with two other players for the lead in triples with two and is second in slugging percentage at 1.000. He is third best in HR/AB Ratio at 1/12.00.

Mahoning Valley’s Mitch Reevers is also filling up the stat sheet. Mitch is seventh in the batting race at .409, tied for first in At Bats (22), and is tied for second in hits with nine. In five games played so far, Reevers has hit two home runs and drove in six. He has also scored five times.

Not to be forgotten are some pitchers off to some good early starts. Connecticut Tigers. Jack O’Loughlin is tied for the lowest batting average in the first week. He has faced 12 hitters and has yet to give up a hit. He leads in WHIP at 0.00 and is third in fewest baserunners per 9 IP. His ratio is 2.25 in 4 innings of work.

The Brooklyn Cyclones may have found themselves a closer in Mac Lopez. He leads the league in saves with two, and in games with three. He also leads in games finished with three. Safe to say when Lopez is given the ball, he takes care of things without the need of any help from his bullpen buddies.

The Lowell Spinners have put together a pitching staff of strike throwers. In six games played, the staff has struck out 65 batters faced. That leads the New York Penn League through six games.

Cole Brannen of the Spinners tops the league in stolen bases going 4-for-4, while the team is 7-for-8 overall. New Manager Corey Wimberly has put in place the run game, something he was very good at himself with over 300 steals during his 12-year minor league career.
