River Hawks Take Regular-Season Finale, 5-3, Against Stony Brook
LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team used a four-run second inning and took the regular-season finale, 5-3, against Stony Brook to win the series on Saturday morning.
After a scoreless first frame, Ben Prada (Laurel, Md.) worked a one-out rally and following a Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) single the senior stole third. Fellow senior, Nick Barry (Grafton, Mass.) blooped a single to center to break the deadlock.
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) sent a triple into left to score two more runs and Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
In their final home games, Maiola and Barry led the way for the River Hawks (24-27, 13-11) as Maiola drove in two and Barry picked up a pair of hits.
The Seawolves (29-23, 12-12) got back in the contest with a three-run home run off the bat of Nick Grande in the top of the third.
Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out single as Tumosa scored his fourth run of the series.
After starter Jack Riley (Worcester, Mass.) went four innings, Henry Funaro (Lowell, Mass.) sat down the first nine batters he faced to pick up the five inning relief win.
UMass Lowell awaits other results around the league before seeding for the America East tournament is finalized. As of the end of Saturday, the River Hawks sit in the second and final spot for the first-round bye.
