BC BASEBALL: Galland Tallies Only Hit in Loss to Wake

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team fell, 3-0, to Wake Forest in the series opener on Friday in the first game of the doubleheader at Harrington Athletics Village at Brighton Fields. Freshman Chris Galland logged the only hit for the Eagles (12-20, 5-11 ACC).

Juniors Thomas Lane, Sean Hughes, and Zach Stromberg held the Demon Deacons (15-20, 8-8 ACC) scoreless for the final three innings. Galland’s single in the first extended his hit streak to seven games, tying his career-long. He also stole a base to improve to 23-for-23 on the stolen-base path.

Junior RHP Jacob Stevens went five innings in his 39^th career start, which tied for first in BC record books. He allowed eight hits, two runs – one earned – walked just one and struck out six.

Griffin Roberts, the starting pitcher for Wake, walked just one and struck out 11 over eight innings.

BC HIGHLIGHTS

• Freshman Chris Galland logged the only BC hit of the game, extending his hit streak to seven games, tying a career long. He stole one base in the game and is a perfect 23-for-23 on the season, first in the ACC and third on BC’s single-season record list.
• Junior RHP Jacob Stevens allowed eight hits, two runs – one earned – walked just one and struck out six in his five-inning start. It was the 39^th start of his career, tying Terry Doyle (2005-08) for first in BC record books.
• Junior RHP Thomas Lane allowed his first inherited runner to score of the season, coming in with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh. A wild pitch plated one before he got three outs. Of the 23 the righty has inherited, just that one has scored.
• Senior Jake Palomaki drew a walk in the ninth. He has reached base in 29 of the 32 games this season.
• Lane, along with classmates RHP Sean Hughes and LHP Zach Stromberg all pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Hughes struck out two and Stromberg one.

KEY PLAYS

• Wake scored the first run of the game on a throwing error in the fourth and it would be all the Demon Deacons would need as starter RHP Griffin Roberts and closer RHP Rayne Supple kept the Eagles off the board.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Wake Forest broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, plating two. Shane Muntz lead off with a double to left and with one down, Chris Lanzilli hit a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Stevens attempted to pick off Lanzilli but his throw got away, allowing Muntz to score and Lanzilli moved up to third. Logan Harvey followed with a single up the middle to plate the second run.
• The Demon Deacons added a run in the seventh. Junior RHP John Witkowski loaded the bases on two walks and an error. Classmate RHP Thomas Lane came in with the bases loaded and no outs and allowed his first inherited runner of the season to score on a wild pitch. He then forced a grounder to third, which junior third baseman Jake Alu fired home, gunning down the runner at the plate. Lane got a fly ball and a groundout to end the inning and keep it a 3-0 game.
