The Boston College Eagles have been a very good home team this basketball season. However, on the road, it’s been a far different result. Heading into the game at Pittsburgh, the Eagles had zero wins away from home in conference play, and only one overall vs Hartford back in December.
On Tuesday night, BC notched win number one in league play on the road beating Pittsburgh 81-58. They improved to 16-10, 6-7 in the ACC. The 16 wins are the most since the 2012-13 season.
For Pittsburgh, a difficult season continues as they fall to 8-19 overall and 0-14 in the conference. The fourteen losses in a row are a school record.
The way the first thirteen minutes of the game started, the Panthers looked poised to snap that losing streak and get win number one in the league.
They jumped out to a fifteen point advantage thanks to some good shooting and sloppy play from the Eagles. BC was missing open shots which led them to shoot 22% from the field and 2-for-12 on threes. With 7:49 left in first half, it was 22-13 Panthers.
To make matters worse, the Eagles best player Jerome Robinson got hit with a technical foul that sent him to the bench with three personal fouls. It was starting to look like another long night for BC.
That’s when things started to change. Vin Baker came off the Eagles bench and scored nine of his 11 total in the first half including two three-point makes as part of an 11-0 run that brought BC back to within three, 30-27.
The Eagles defense also started to makes plays, as they held Pitt scoreless over a 4:47 span. BC would tie the game by hitting five free throws, three from Baker and two from Nic Popovic. It was 32-32 with under a minute left. Marcus Carr would give Pitt the halftime lead by knocking down two free throws of his own 34-32 Pittsburgh at the break.
Despite the poor first half shooting by the Eagles, the one thing they were doing well was hitting the glass. They had 14 offensive rebounds that translated into seven second-chance points while allowing Pittsburgh zero offensive boards.

The second half became the Jerome Robinson show. The ACC player of the week erupted for 25 second-half points on his way to a game-high 27. BC started the half on an 11-0 burst. Robinson, with a couple of baskets, was joined by a Jordan Chatman three (16 for him including 7 of 12 from deep). The Eagles led 43-34 with 15:33 to play. They held the Panthers scoreless again, this time for 3:43.
Another drought by Pitt, this one of 2:50 led to an Eagles run of 9-0. Robinson had six on three made hoops, Chatman nailed another three. It was 52-40 BC with 12:21 left to play.
BC’s second-half shooting percentage looked a whole lot better at 62.5% with 3:40 to play. Both teams cleared their benches to let subs finish the game, Boston College got a much needed road win 81-58 over Pittsburgh.
BC went on to outscore ACC opponent Pittsburgh 49-24 in the second half to advance to an 81-58 victory on the road and improve to 6-7 in the conference on Tuesday night.
