For the first time since the 2015- 16 season, the Boston College Eagles have won three in a row thanks to a 73-53 win over Sacred Heart. BC was led by Graduate Student Deontae Hawkins game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds. Head Coach Jim Christian said of Hawkins performance “he was terrific”. Hawkins got help from Freshman Swingman Steffon Mitchell who dropped 13 points and nine boards.

This was done despite getting only four points out of their best player, Jerome Robinson. He had an off night for the Eagles shooting only 1-14 from the field, but he did have four assists on the night. After the game, Christian said Robinson struggled offensively but likes the assists and only one turnover for the game. It is the first time Robinson has had less than nine points in a game since December 9, 2016, vs Hartford. In fact, BC turned the ball over only five times for the entire game. It the second time in three outings they have had less than 10 turnovers.

This game did not start out the way it finished as the Pioneer came out smoking hot hitting their first six shots from the field to take an early 13-5 lead. The start was sparked by the two starting forwards for Head Coach Anthony Latina. Senior, Joseph Lopez, had a monster game with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Mario Matasovic chipped in 14 and six on the night. Their production got the BC big men in foul trouble early in the game and by halftime, Sacred Heart had outscored the Eagles in the paint by a 20 to six margin. They were also outrebounded 24 to 16 in the first half on their way to a 51- 38 advantage for the game.

The Pioneer would maintain the lead for almost the entire first half. BC would take the lead only once during the first twenty minutes. A Key Bowman (14 points) jumper gave the home team a 15 to 13 margin with eleven minutes left till halftime. Sacred Heart would have leads of eight points twice in the first stanza, on their way to a 31- 30 halftime lead. With their two big men accounting for 18 of the 31 first-half points, many of those buckets were around the rim.

The lead could have been bigger if not for the 13 points the Eagles received from Hawkins as well as the six from Bowman. The home team was getting outplayed in front of a sparse crowd for the first time in the young season, so how would they respond in the second half?

Just fine thank you as the Eagles would outscore Sacred Heart 43 to 22. Their defense, which coach Christian said was poor in the first half mainly because of a lot of blown switches, was much better. So, to was the ball movement which has been a staple of this team in the early going. It would take a while, but BC took control of the game in the second twenty minutes getting the lead up to twenty points and keeping it there.  The final margin of victory does not tell the story how much of a tough time the Eagles had in this one.

After the game, Christian said the 14 offensive rebounds the team gave up are too many. He credited Hawkins with providing a spark in the locker room at halftime by talking to the team. He is becoming a leader on this team and his play on the court reflect it.

The Eagles can now get ready for their first real test of the season as they will head to Mohegan Sun this weekend to finish play in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic. On Saturday afternoon they will face Texas Tech, then on Sunday either Lasalle or nationally ranked Northwestern.
